Need Assessment

Assignment Content

A needs assessment is a systematic appraisal of the needs of a particular population within a community.

Imagine you have been tasked with planning a needs assessment in your community. To complete this, you will need to do the following:

  • Read existing literature on a population of interest to you.
    • Interview at least one key informant.
    • Develop a plan for data collection and analysis.
    • Summarize your findings.

Write a 2,100- to 2,800-word paper to summarize your needs assessment. Include the following:

  • Determine the target population. Based on your knowledge of your community, specify the target population for your needs assessment. The target population could be clients such as trauma survivors, preschool children with autism-spectrum disorders, adults in a substance-abuse treatment program, or homeless individuals. It might also be client advocates, parents, administrators, or human services professionals. Use current published literature and your knowledge of your community to identify a population with a perceived need or needs.
    • Begin your paper with a summary of the perceived need or needs.
    • Include existing data from published studies in this section of your report. Read a number of articles on the topic so you are well versed in the needs of a particular population.
    • Describe the current status of the population in your community.
    • For example, if you are interested in addressing the needs of homeless people in your community, describe the services and resources currently available and accessible to this population. Many needs may already be met by existing programs and services. Describe these needs.
    • Interview at least one key informant or specialist in the field. Try to get as much information as you can on gaps that exist between available and needed services and resources. Ask probing questions.
    • For example, what is the single most pressing need that homeless individuals have in this community? What are other important needs?
    • How are these needs currently being addressed? If a particular need is not being addressed, why is it not being addressed? What resources are currently available for addressing these needs? Who would deliver the needed services? Summarize the results of your interview in this section of your report.
    • Devise one additional strategy for collecting information about the needs of the target population.
    • For example, you may decide to administer a questionnaire or organize a focus group. Discuss your strategy in detail. If there is already a validated questionnaire that is relevant to the group you are assessing, describe it. If not, describe the type of instrument that would be useful in assessing the needs of the target population. For additional information on needs assessment strategies, conduct additional Internet research.
    • Outline a general plan for data analysis.
    • Once you have collected data, either qualitative or quantitative, you need to analyze and interpret it. Describe how you would do this.
    • The next step in a needs assessment is to analyze the data and use the results to plan appropriate interventions. Because you are only planning and not conducting a needs assessment, you will not have actual data to analyze and use. However, you may still anticipate the needs of a given population and discuss strategies for addressing them.
    • For example, if information gleaned from research articles and if key informants suggest that the homeless population in your community needs education on existing mental health services, you may develop a plan for helping the homeless population learn more about community mental health services currently available to them. In other words, you can devise a strategy for increasing awareness of mental health services. At this point, your plan will be general and tentative, because you have not actually analyzed data. In this section of your paper, offer at least one strategy for addressing a likely need.
    • Summarize your findings in a concluding paragraph.

Cite a minimum of five scholarly references.

Format your paper according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.

Analytic research

Write a 5-7 page analytic research essay in which you research and analyze one theme or aspect of Toni Morrison’s novel The Bluest Eye. (See steps below.) The paper must be double-spaced, following APA style.

In one or two sentences, identify what you think is the most important theme in The Bluest Eye. Or you might notice a key symbol or detail that runs like a thread through the novel. For example, how does Morrison portray God in the novel? Or race relations. Or family dynamics throughout the story. As you do your research, you will certainly find specific and detailed ideas that you could pursue in a paper. It is this important theme or main idea that leads into your thesis statement.

Step 3

Spend some time thinking about how to support your thesis statement. In this case, you think about how Morrison uses the various elements of fiction to highlight or explain your theme, idea, detail, symbol, etc. Identify specific passages, events, character actions, conflicts, descriptions, and details, etc. that support your thesis. This is the textual evidence that you will provide in support of your thesis.

Step 4

After you prepare your annotated bibliography, read through the five sources, the so-called “secondary” works on the novel, that you found. Add two or three more with further study as needed. (These are books, journal articles, interviews, websites on Morrison, audio-visual materials, etc.) Identify passages you can quote, paraphrase, or summarize and use as supporting evidence for the thesis of your essay. These expert sources will support your own voice as you construct your argument.

Step 5

Use the evidence from the text that you have identified, as well as the additional researched materials you have compiled, to compose a focused, well-organized, academic essay of 5-7 pages, double-spaced. Remember, as stated above, the essay must have an introduction that contains your thesis statement, a body of evidence that supports your thesis, and a conclusion that sums up your main points and restates your position. A basic outline might look like this:

  • Introduction – Begin with a quote related to your thesis, then create a transition into your thesis statement. Your thesis lets your reader know your main idea. Everything else in the essay then supports your main idea with examples and evidence.
  • First Example from the Novel to Support the Thesis

Quote from novel and discussion.

Support from critic or secondary source

  • Second Example from the Novel to Support the Thesis

Quote from novel and discussion.

Support from critic or secondary source

  • Third Example from the Novel to Support the Thesis

Quote from novel and discussion.

Support from critic or secondary source

  • Conclusion – Summarize your three main points. Show how they support thesis in introduction. Clinch it with closing remark or quote.

Use and Citation of Sources

The primary source you will need to use for this essay is the novel. You must reference the specific page numbers to which you are referring whenever you quote, summarize, or paraphrase passages from Morrison’s text. This needs to be done in correct APA style.

In addition, you will need to use 5 to 8 additional, secondary sources. You will need to research and include “varied” sources. That is, you will want to use a mix of books, articles, interviews, websites, audio-visual materials, and the like. Make sure to cite these sources correctly, both in the body of your paper and on your APA style reference page.

Your instructor or the online librarian can assist you with this endeavor. Do not hesitate to contact them!

Things to Keep in Mind As You Write

Your analytic research essay is an analysis of a text that will prove a certain interpretation. It is not a plot summary. Do not simply retell the story. Identify significant elements (character, setting, language, imagery etc.) and explain how and why they support your thesis. Use the voices of other experts on the text that you have located in your research to support your own critical-analytical voice.

PRODUCT MANAGEMENT & SITUATION ANALYSIS

Assignment Overview

A Customer Focus

After you determine what you are selling, the next critical part of the marketing plan is to understand to whom you are selling. Knowing your customer is essential to ensure that the company is delivering an appropriate message to the target market. Marketing success is about turning sales leads into profits.
Not only should a company focus on servicing its current customer base, it must also seek out new customers.

This module’s case will focus on defining your product’s customer demographic and psychographic profile, along with customer relationship management (CRM) and customer satisfaction metrics. CRM is about managing current and prospective customers for strong and long customer relationships.

Case Assignment

Check out Nielsen Insights to find out more about today’s customer. Visit Experian and Mosaic® to find out more about using marketing research to develop customer profiles.

Using information from the websites and articles from the library’s full-text article databases (Academic Search Complete, Business Source Complete, and/or ProQuest Central), create a customer profile brief:

Customer Demographics and Psychographics—A review of current customer demographics—explain why this demographic profile is your primary target market.

  • Develop a demographic profile of the potential customer segment.
  • List at least two demographic tools you can use to help develop the demographic profile.
  • Potential customer market demographics. Define the psychographic profile of your customer.

Customer Relationship Management—Find two CRM tools that help companies identify pertinent information about their customer segments.

  • How will you use these tools to manage the customer relationship?

Since you are engaging in research, be sure to cite and reference the sources in APA format. The paper should be written in third person; this means words like “I”, “we”, and “you” are not appropriate. For more information see Differences Between First and Third Person.

Reword

Please reword these paragraphs in your own words DO NOT USE the same words as in the paragraphs. Thanks.

  • 1-According to Chapter 14, the competing values framework (CVF) provides a practical way for managers to understand, measure, and change organizational culture. There are four types or organizational culture; clan culture, adhocracy culture, market culture, and hierarchy culture. Clan culture describes companies that have an internal, family-type, focus that encourages collaboration, trust, and support to achieve effectiveness. Adhocracy culture describes companies that have an external focus on creating new products and services by being creative and adapting quickly to changes. Market culture describes companies that value stability and control. Competition drives these organizations with a high focus on customers and profits. Hierarchy culture describes companies that have an internal focus valuing stability and control over flexibility.

At my company, the elements that have the greatest influence on organizational culture are create and collaborate. Without the create element, we would remain the same and end up losing out on business because our competitors would keep moving forward while we remained the same. To remain competitive in the business we must keep up with the technological advances. Collaboration is key to keeping employees involved and motivated. The morale of the workers and the company’s investment in developing them, keeps employees and their knowledge in the company and hopefully not leaving to go work for a competitor.

  • 2-According to Chapter 14, organizational culture is defined as the set of shared, taken-for-granted implicit assumptions that a group holds and that determines how it perceives, thinks about, and reacts to its various environments. The four characteristics of organizational culture are shared concept, learned over time, influences our behavior at work, and impacts outcomes at multiple levels. There are five elements that drive organizational culture; the founder’s values, the industry and business environment, the national culture, the organizations vision and strategies, and the behavior of leaders. These drivers of organizational culture influence the structure and internal processes of the company which drive the group and social processes. This flow then affects work attitudes and behaviors which impacts the outcomes of the organization.
  • 3-According to Chapter 16, stress is defined as an adaptive response to environmental demands, referred to as stressors, that produce adaptive responses that include physical, emotional, and behavioral reactions that are influenced by individual differences. This is basically the interaction between person and environmental factors as potential causes or remedies for stress. Eustress is described as “good stress” where the stress generates positive emotions and creates motivation, such as going on a first date.

It is important for managers to be actively aware of what issues are causing employees stress to try to reduce these stressors. Workplace stress can cause decreases in job satisfaction, performance, positive emotions, and commitment. Stress also increases turnover or burnout in employees. For the organization to retain its skilled and knowledgeable workforce, they must try to reduce stress to keep employees happy and motivated.

In my workplace, one of the causes me stress are when I have meetings with high level leadership and we aren’t making our schedule. I don’t like explaining why my team isn’t making their goals. Another stress for me is our part shortages. If I cannot get parts on time, I will not be able to make my product on time. I get stressed out dealing with our procurement organization. The third thing that stresses me out is the unpredictability of the business. We have orders booked for several years but customers can cancel those orders or things can happen that cause us to lose business to competitors. I cannot really control that other than to make sure I keep customers happy by maintaining on time delivery but I still worry about our future progress. I deal with these stressed by doing the best that I can every day and utilizing my resources to make sure I am not trying to carry the load by myself. I know that I can only do my best and the rest will fall into place.

  • 4-According to the text in Chapter 16 there are many reasons that contribute to change in the work place. With that being said I think that several of these work hand in hand. For instance need for improvement to stay ahead of the competition as well as technology being involved in that equation as well. I know from my own situation that we are always trying to improve on operations and procedures to make the company and it’s processes as well as it’s finished products making them more appealing to current and future customers. These changes that I have seen have been for the better and have not been made out of necessity. Proactive and self policing for the most part take away they need for change to be a reactive one.

Please answer these questions in your own words.

  • 1-Class,

How can mentoring programs help to drive and shape organizational culture? Chapter 14 identifies five career functions (Sponsorship, Exposure & visibility, Coaching, Protecting, and Challenging assignments) and four psychosocial functions (Role modeling, Acceptance & confirmation, Counseling, and Friendship). Which is more to you when looking to either mentor or be mentored, the career functions or the psychosocial functions? Why?

  • 2-Class,

How might a leader go about creating an organizational culture based on shared beliefs and values? If you were the CEO, how might you go about creating a shared set of beliefs for the organization? How might your approach vary depending on the size and type of organization?

3-Class,

What about the issue of forced change? For example, recently in the news there has been a lot of talk about different companies merging or being bought up by competitors. What type impact do you think there is on an organizational culture when two different companies with desperate cultures merge together? What specific examples from you think of from the news recently? Using Lewin’s model, how long before the new corporate culture could have been refrozen into place

  • 4-Do you think that people are more willing to accept a higher level of stress if they are paid more? Why do you think that may (or may not) be the case? Have you ever been willing to accept a higher stressed job because the pay was better (or a lower paid job because it was less stressful)? Why is money a factor?
