Designing Qualitative Research

As you recall from earlier weeks, various philosophical orientations hold unique epistemological and ontological assumptions. These assumptions return to the forefront of attention when considering how to evaluate the rigor or quality of various qualitative research designs.

Typically, when speaking of validity, qualitative researchers are referring to research that is credible and trustworthy, i.e., the extent to which one can have confidence in the study’s findings (Lincoln & Guba, 1985). Generalizability, a marker of reliability, is typically not the main purpose of qualitative research because the researcher rarely selects a random sample with a goal to generalize to a population or to other settings and groups. Rather, a qualitative researcher’s goal is often to understand a unique event or a purposively selected group of individuals. Therefore, when speaking of reliability, qualitative researchers are typically referring to research that is consistent or dependable (Lincoln & Guba, 1985), i.e., the extent to which the findings of the study are consistent with the data that was collected.

For this Discussion, you will explain criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research and consider the connection of such criteria to philosophical orientations. You will also consider the ethical implications of designing qualitative research.

With these thoughts in mind:

Write an explanation of two criteria for evaluating the quality of qualitative research designs. Next, explain how these criteria are tied to epistemological and ontological assumptions underlying philosophical orientations and the standards of your discipline. Then, identify a potential ethical issue in qualitative research and explain how it might influence design decisions. Finally, explain what it means for a research topic to be amenable to scientific study using a qualitative approach.

Be sure to support your Main Issue Post and Response Post with reference to the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.

Need help quick in Humanities

Widely regarded as one the finest feminist writers in the short story segment, Kate Chopin manages to use symbolism to achieve in-depth understanding of human desire. Through her husband’s death, Mrs. Mallard(the main character) is not deeply depressed by the loss of her husband. However, a sense of freedom seems to beacon through the window, which is symbolic of the freedom she realizes awaits for her future. Chopin is showing a social situation where a woman is a prisoner to her husband. This can be supported by Chopin’s choice of using ‘monstrous joy’ when making an overview of Mrs. Mallard’s future. The story of an hour relates closely to Chopin’s  life. It was not until her husband died, did she open her mind to more opportunities and challenges.

Kate Chopin’s story gives a  clearer sense of slavery and women’s. During those periods, rights were realities that she incorporated in many of her stories and portraying women in a less than conventional manner, with individual needs and wants. Through clever artistic ways, Chopin links the fictional part of life with the actual reality. It’s safe to say that Kate Chopin shaped the manner regularly focused on the way that people shaped by their social environment. The story tends to show woman enslavement in the society whereby the woman has no right to undertake certain activities, this system is of late changing and we see almost both the man and the woman having certain capable rights on each other.

The Heroic Journey

Psychological and Cultural Meanings of Myths

This week you explore the heroic journey of Hercules with awareness of the psychological AND cultural contexts of quest myths.

For the psychological context, you identify stages of the Herculean quest according to a storytelling pattern that Joseph Campbell called the mono-myth. Mono is a prefix taken from the Greek mónos, meaning one, single, alone. Thus, the term mono-myth indicates that across cultures various heroic figures in stories of The Quest follow a similar pattern–similar because it is built into the psyche of human beings.

For the cultural context, you will compare several versions of the Hercules myth to find connections between storytelling and cultural values. Thus, in spite of Campbell’s idea that a heroic journey shows the same elements across cultures, you will see that cultural context shapes the telling of a story. We will ask ourselves whether cultural context also shapes the meaning of the various common stages of the heroic quest.

The Week Five discussion is based on these Learning Resources:

Joseph Campbell interviews [3 videos: Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth https://umuc.equella.ecollege.com/file/fd33be91-bf…, Mythology of the Trickster , The Monomyth

Stages of the Hero’s Journey [text of Chris Vogel’s Foreword to Myth & the Movies] http://www.tlu.ee/~rajaleid/montaazh/Hero’s%20Jour…; Hercules: The Spiritual Emphasis in Euripides [James Head’s text]https://umuc.equella.ecollege.com/file/4952a8da-bf…; and Hercules the Hero [Christine House’s text] http://www.yale.edu/ynhti/curriculum/units/1998/2/….

Chris Vogler’s Foreword to Myth and the Movies in this week’s Learning Resources outlines these stages of the Mono-myth:

The Ordinary World

The Call to Adventure

Refusal of the Call

Meeting the Mentor

Crossing the Threshold

Tests, Allies, Enemies

Approach to the Inmost Cave

The Ordeal

Reward

The Road Back

The Resurrection

Return with the Elixir

Vogler also lists these archetypal characters found in Heroic Journey myths:

Hero

Mentor

Threshold Guardian

Herald

Shapeshifter

Shadow

Trickster

Your assignment is as follows: Take ONE of the labors of Hercules listed in “Hercules the Hero” [Christine House’s text] and relate it to all relevant stages of the mono-myth (listed above) and archetypes (listed above). Then compare one aspect of two versions of the Hercules myth in light of the observations of James Head or Christine House, and comment on the significance of any cultural similarities and differences found.

Clearly label and explain your answers. Then respond to the postings of two other students. You key post should be between 300-400 words long. Each of your two responses should be between 150-200 words long. Initial posts are due by Thursday at 11:30 PM ET (Eastern Standard Time in the USA), and the two substantial responses to fellow classmates are due by the end of the week before the discussion locks on Sunday by 11:30 PM ET.
