ENG 121: English Composition I

Strategies to help me with college-level reading are:

I plan to continue using the SQ3R (Huber, 2004) method throughout my college experience and probably thereafter. I plan to take notes on information I feel is credible to do so on and write down words I may need definitions for. I plan to seek out help when I’m still not understanding the material from my instructors, peers, advisers, and possibly my family if need be. I plan to implement the “Survey” and “Question” (Huber, 2004) methods more to improve my understanding of materials using the SQ3R (Huber, 2004) method because these are the two that I use least and I can tell it holds me back.

These strategies will help you as you continue to improve your college-level reading throughout your time at Ashford.

Techniques to use for developing my ideas for writing are:

I plan to continue practicing writing, whether it’s blogging, journal, writing an essay, or an e-mail. I plan on just brainstorming ideas and writing them down regardless how silly they may be. I plan on better identifying a topic that will be a better focus for what is asked of me in a paper. I plan on considering my audience before choosing a topic that I have brainstormed so I have a clear focus on writing instead of going off topic. I plan on developing subjects and topics based on myself or my personal interests, hobbies, experiences and what I do in life.

These techniques will be useful in every course when planning to write a paper.

Three things I will focus on improving in my writing are:

I plan on better staying on topic and not veering off into details that are not about the purpose of my topic. I need to improve my knowledge of grammar and citations when writing. I plan on continuing taking the practice tests in the Ashford Writing Center until I can score a 100% on all of them. I seem to write passively and not actively making my papers hard to understand. I need to stop using non-sense words in my writing that are unnecessary such as: very, more, always, forever, and never. These non-sense words are the main thing spell-check and others have told me are a flaw in my writing.

Return to these areas of focus as you complete college-level writing, though they may change and evolve as you grow and develop as a writer.

Resources I can access to help me improve in these areas are:

I can access my textbooks from past and current courses to freshen up on or better understand methods that will help me improve. I can access the Ashford Writing Center to help me with grammar and citations misunderstandings. I can access the Ashford Library for help with finding good sites with information that is credible for a paper. I can use the Writing Reviser tool to help me with common issues in my writing and receive automated feedback. I can access TurnItIn through Waypoint to help me make sure I have cited what needs to be cited. I can access my adviser’s and instructor’s for more details or better understandings when I become lost and need more insight of where to find the right resource to help me.

These resources will support your writing throughout your time at Ashford.

My reflection on my progress in this course:

I feel I have progressed gradually throughout this course. I have given it my all and learned many new ways of reading and writing pro-actively. I was most nervous about this class when I first received my class schedule and new in week one I was right to be nervous. This class pushed me to a whole new level of understanding how sloppy reading can affect how you take in material and how poor writing can offend your audience and not make sense because I as a writer was not educated enough to put paragraphs together. I do feel the tests we have taken in this class are areas I need to improve on if I want to continue to be a better writer and continue being at the grades I wish to continue having. I learned how to be more descriptive with my writing when before what I thought of as details were really subjects going off topic. I really needed this class and feel it has taught me information I will continue using even after my college experience is over.

Throughout your time at Ashford, reflect on the personal, professional, and academic growth you have seen within yourself throughout each course.

Strategies to help me with college-level reading are:

The strategies that help me read on a college level is to read as much as i can. I also like to check out books in my local libabry to get a feel of reading longer books and timeing myself on how fast i can read it as well as understand the information.Another strategy i used is to write questions down before i start to read the article and then answer when i am finsihed reading.Words i may not be familar to i normally go the extra mile and look up the definition just to get a understanding of the word and the meaning it has on the article.
Techniques to use for developing my ideas for writing are:

The techniques I use to help write a paper is have a topic that I can give positivie and negative feed back to as well as having good explaintions. I use a think bubble instead of a rough draft which is the main reason why my papers do not flow together.

Three things I will focus on improving in my writing are:

The three things i will focus on while writing will to First, keep my aduience attention.
Secondly, I will improve on expanding my vocabualy. I normally choose words that i hear and i use on the daily basis rather then finding a vocuabluary word in the textbook.
Thirdly, I will keep my bubble brain storming more organized so it is clear.Im sure that these three tasks will help improve my writing grade and also improving my writing skills.

Resources I can access to help me improve in these areas are:

The resources i can use to help with my writing would be to use the writing center or use the write lab. I like the write lab just because i can receive instant feed back. I will try the writing center soon im just worried they will not have my paper ready in time for me to turn it in on time.
My reflection on my progress in this course:

The reflection i see on this course was great. The reason why i said it was great is because i tend to give up when writing because i am more of a free hand writer that has no structure, as if im writing a journal.

CLASSMATE POST 3:

Peer Review:
The main area of my area of my paper that I need to work on is being more detailed when talking about my transition into motherhood. I can give my readers more insight into what I was going through mentally as well as emotionally. I think my paper lacks emotion when I reread it myself and reflect on the experience that occurred. My reviews from my reviewers were about my grammar errors and one person suggested that I be a little bit more detailed. I will fix any areas in my paper as well as take her suggestion into consideration when I revise and edit my work. When I start revising my work I can read it to be sure that my paper flows and that I don’t have any gaps. When I start the editing process I will check for punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar errors. This will help strengthen my paper and be sure that my readers understand the challenges I faced. My reviewers thought that I made the purpose of my essay very clear and that I did a good job addressing all the points I made in my thesis. My reviewers also said I did a great job staying on topic throughout my essay. Reading these reviews made me more confident on the work that I turned in. I think that I did effectively reached my audience with how detailed my paper was. I tried to make my readers understand as well as imagine the different transitions I went through while pregnant. I believe that reading the comments from the peer review from my classmates as well as my instructor helped me figure out what direction I can take my paper into. This peer review has helped me become a better writer as well as become more comfortable with writing.

ENG 121: English Composition I

Strategies to help me with college-level reading are:

Some strategies that I have learned that help me with college level reading are the SQ3R Strategy, Annotating and Note Taking, Brainstorming, and the use of a Reading Journal. The SQ3R strategy is extremely helpful to me and probably the most helpful out of all of them because it is very organizational and helps me better under the reading. Annotating and note taking is very important to me, since I seem to forget things quite often, notes will remind me. Brainstorming is very important too, and can be key to understand the reading. Using a reading journal is completely optional of course, but can be very helpful.

Techniques to use for developing my ideas for writing are:

Some techniques I will likely use a lot while writing at a college level are starting with a draft, revising, editing, proofreading, and writing a final draft. Writing a draft will get your ideas down on paper and position you in the direction you are aiming towards. Revising is carefully reading over your work, while making notes in the margins, and looking for mistakes such as grammar, run on sentences, sentence structure, etc. While editing your paper you should always be sure to check grammar and sentence structure. Proofreading is usually done aloud so you can physically hear how the paper sounds to be sure it sounds logical and understandable. Writing your final draft should include all revision notes, edits, and proof read notes.

Three things I will focus on improving in my writing are:

Three things I will focus on improving in my writing are, sentence structure, run on sentences and grammar. I have good organization thoughts but sometimes my thoughts get ahead of me therefore my writing tends to be all over the place. I have a bad habit of run on sentences in all my writing pieces. I like to get as much out as possible and sometimes it’s too much. My grammar is pretty much perfect but nobody is perfect so I slip up every now and then.

Resources I can access to help me improve in these areas are: Essentials of College Writing – Christine M. Connell and Kathy Sole, webinars, and google.

My reflection on my progress in this course:

My reflection on my progress in this course is I have learned a lot about college level writing and reading. I have learned techniques that will forever help me while writing papers and reading.
