Conduct an Oral History Interview

interviewing people

All people have stories to tell: about where they came from, who their ancestors were, and how they arrived at the place where they now live. Interview someone about their stories. Find someone who has a story of immigration to share – it doesn’t necessarily have to be a long-distance change. You cannot interview yourself, but the story you share can be from a family member or a total stranger – ask around and you’ll discover many sources among the people you see every day. You can always share someone’s immigration experience from long ago or very recently. Really listen carefully and try to transcribe your interviewee’s experiences. Remember to include the details in parentheses.

1. Who is the interviewee? (include a picture)

2. Where was their place of origin? (include a map)

3. Why did they leave?

4. When did they arrive here?

5. What were their first impressions?

6. What did they most like about America (or other location)?

7. What did they most dislike?

8. Where did they first live?

9. How did this experience change them?

10. Would they do it again?
