Can acting out of a sense of duty be the wrong thing to do?
Think of an example in which someone (perhaps you) acted out of a sense of duty, even though by doing so one caused greater harm than if one had not acted, one failed to prevent harm from occurring, or one failed to bring about greater happiness.
Then explain whether you think that
a)this person was right to do that despite the negative consequences;
b)it was wrong for this person to act in this way, despite the fact that it was their moral duty to do so; or
c)this person was mistaken about what their duty really was.
Be sure to back up your answer with argument and references from this week’s reading materials. Discuss the positive and negative aspects of a deontological theory as it relates to another of the theories you have encountered in this course.
Decide on a/one deontological theory, name that theory, describe and explain that theory, and then develop your position based on that particular theory. Provide at least three reasons to support the position that you take.
Please remember, this is not about your personal or professional beliefs. This is about deontological theories and how they might apply to the issue. Please try to leave your personal feelings on the doorstep. The purpose of this DQ is for you to demonstrate that you have read, studied, learned, and understand deontological moral theories and nothing more than that. Please be sure to keep the conversation confined to the discussion question and deontological theories only.
Please be sure to use the references I’ve attached and use exact citation as well as in-text citation. (for example. use specific page number).
