1) I know some of you are looking for something to post about this week. How about selecting for evaluation either Gerald Ford or Jimmy Carter, and offer an assessment of his presidency? How did their policies compare to the more politically successful Ronald Reagan?  Incorporate and appropriately cite references from the University Library.

2) Who is the president really accountable to?  Is it the president’s job to actually push initiates such as healthcare or gun control? Is that in his/her job description?

3) Class, is it even possible to run a country and only tell the truth? Is it a lie when a President holds back and does not inform the public of the whole situation? For example, is Johnson a liar for holding back information about Vietnam? The reporters could have asked the hard questions, but they chose not to until Tet. So, is a president required to always tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

4)  Class, should presidents not be allowed to hold the truth, or tell a lie if it means national security would be at risk otherwise?

5) Class, how has our society rebounded from the Watergate scandal?

6)  As most of you have said, most presidents seem to lie. Was there a beginning to this? Probably not, you could consider some of Washington’s public remarks lies told to placate one faction or another.  Do all humans lie at some point though? The answer is probably yes. So why should a president be different? Is there an amount of lies that a President can tell? Or, more importantly,  do we, the American people, hold our president on two high of a moral pedestal? Do we want too much out of the president?

7) Although it was Nixon’s policy, Ford is really responsible for the beginning of the Detente between the United States and the USSR because he executed the agenda after Nixon’s departure. Detente – an easing in relations – during the Cold War could only begin through certain actions. Because the United States and the Soviet Union had stockpiled bigger and better bombs and missiles since the end of World War II, attention had to be focused on the Cold War concept of  Mutual Assured Destruction.   To alleviate this, the two countries began to sign treaties to limit their stockpile. Ford was the first President to take the Cold War in this direction.

Class can anyone go explain what Mutual Assured Destruction is?
