Requirements:

Introductory paragraph with clear thesis statement

Thesis should give a brief overview of each issue that you selected and a statement of each issue’s significance. Thesis statement may be more than one sentence

Body paragraphs with clear topic sentences that relate to your thesis.

You MUST cite BOTH Give Me Liberty AND one primary document from Voices of Freedom for EACH issue that you select.

Introduce quotes with your own analysis. In other words, a quote should not stand alone as a sentence in your paper (please see syllabus guidelines on this point. They appear in the discussion forum guidelines). Preface the quote by explaining how it illustrates your argument or fits into your analysis.

Quotations should be no longer than 2.5 lines.

Use in-text citations (Foner, Give Me Liberty, 222; or Foner, Voices of Freedom, 234)

Use clear transition sentences to keep the paper flowing and illustrate how the issues that you selected are connected.

Remember, historians are concerned with cause and effect relationships and with change over time – think about these types of connections as you write transition sentences.

Concluding paragraph should summarize your main points and restate the significance of your argument.

DO NOT USE ANY SOURCES OTHER THAN GIVE ME LIBERTY AND VOICES OF FREEDOM.
Foner, Eric. Give Me Liberty!. 4th ed. Vol. 2. New York: W.W. Norton, 2014. Print.
Foner, Eric. Voices of Freedom. 4th ed. Vol. 2. New York: W.W. Norton, 2014. Print.

Citation of outside sources will result in a significant reduction of points.
