In two seperate documents using two seperate university textbooks answer the following sets of questions.

Use any latin american history text book that you can get at a Univserity to answer the following questions

1. Economics: from the miracle to the debt crisis. What was the miracle? Why did the economy collapse in 1982? Why was recovery so slow? In which ways did economic policies change during the debt crisis? Who fell the crisis more? What role did free (international) trade play in the new policies?

2. In what ways did the Salinas presidency change the “social pact”? (E.g.: what the state provided, what citizens could expect from the state, etc). How did foreign relations change? Why is his presidency called “neoliberal”? What happened in 1994?

3. The 1980s and 1990s saw the reemergence of the “civil society” in Mexico. What does that mean? Explain how social movements in 1985, 1988, and 1994/95 reshaped the political landscape of Mexico. Discuss the gap between social movements and politics evidenced in the 1988 election.

Using any Mexican History text book that you can get in a university library answer the following questions

* How would you characterize the PRI hegemony as a political system? (Elections, decision making)

* In which ways did the society change? Focus on urbanization, education, gender roles.

* What were the main economic transformations in this period? Focus on sources of growth, industry, and inequality.

* Trace the major forms of opposition to the PRI hegemony. What was the response of the PRI?
