Patients with type two diabetes must be diligent concerning their diet and sugar intake because diet is a very important part of successfully managing this disease. Most medical providers and practice nurses often provides dietary advice and believe that it is just part of their job. A New Zealand study found that practice nurses were the most common health professional to deliver dietary education to people with type two diabetes compared to general practitioners and dietitians. Little evidence found that dietary advice given by the dietician gave better result than nurses (Parry, et al, 2014). Many health organization employs diabetes nurse educator specifically to help patients deal and manage their chronic condition. A team of nurses provide education regarding diet, oral medication, and insulin administration. An advance nurse practitioner can lead the team. The management of diet in diabetes relies heavily on the compliance of the patients, thus, self-care is important. Uncontrolled blood glucose level usually is the reason why these patients ended up in a crisis and into the emergency department. According to Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory, the clinical guidance of American Diabetes Association suggests attending to health deviation self-care requisites. Patients with diabetes must learn how to evaluate themselves, decide what actions need to be taken to attend to their needs, and perform those actions; and these actions will become possible with education about diabetes (Surucu, & Kizilci, 2012).The team of diabetes nurse educator can implement steps to improve better health outcomes for these population. According to Orem, this process is implementation of the actions organized and planned by nurses in the nursing planning process to develop the self-care agency or dependent-care agency with the aim of meeting the therapeutic self-care demands of individuals (Surucu, & Kizilci, 2012). Barrier that may surface would be resistance from the patients who might not understand the role of diabetes nurse educator. One way to overcome this barrier is to inform the patients on where diabetes nurse educators received their education regarding this particular condition and the management of it, that way it will provide some piece of mind for these patients.
