The scientific method provides standardized steps to follow when conducting research. Following the steps of the scientific method, in order, can ensure that the data obtained is as valid, reliable, and accurate as possible. Sometimes, however, a researcher might be tempted to not do each step or to not do the steps in order. A researcher might be eager to analyze data and not wait until all data is collected before running analyses. Or, a researcher might collect data on a topic without first forming a specific question and hypothesis.
Choose a topic of interest. You can use the same topic you used for Unit 4 and Unit 5 Learning Activities (it is recommended but not required to do this).
Discuss what would happen if you (1) collected data before forming a question/hypothesis, (2) ran analyses before data collection was complete, and (3) drew conclusions before collecting data.
Explain how to conduct a single factor experimental study of this topic that uses the scientific method to improve upon above issues. Be sure to directly state what the steps of the scientific method are.
Discuss one other area of possible bias or error and how use of the scientific method could help to work around this issue.
