Instructions:

Be sure to read the required reading for this week as it will help guide you through the process of analyzing a problem.  It is by Catherine Savini and is linked here as well as in the lesson’s Reading and Resources section.  “Looking for Trouble: Finding Your Way into a Writing Assignment”

“Problems are an expected part of life, and our ability to deal with them can help determine our personal and professional success,” according to Catherine Savini.  As you read her work, you see that problems are also good for writing students, as they can “motivate” good papers and help students formulate a strong thesis statement or argument.  Savini also notes that “Theses do not fall from the sky. Finding a rich problem can be a big step in the direction of developing a compelling thesis.” (56).

Looking at problems, then, is what you will do in this assignment. This analysis project requires you to tackle a problem within your field of study (Criminal Justice) by first exploring and then recommending practical solutions to solve the problem.  Savini provides some great steps to take in working with problems:

1. Noticing;

2. Articulating a problem and its details;

3. Posing fruitful questions;

4. Identifying what is at stake.

Review the piece to see how these steps can help you with your problem analysis paper.

Example:

1. Noticing: A company faces a growing number of insurance claims from employees complaining of eye strain.

2. Articulating a problem and its details: The company recognizes the potential impacts from not acting, including the workers’ compensation claims, lowered productivity, and impacts on employee morale.

3. Posing fruitful questions:

  • To what degree is the lighting affecting employees?
  • Is the lighting the problem, or is the eye strain restricted to workers on a certain floor or area of the office building?
  • Could there be external factors affecting eye strain such as late nights at the office working on their projects?

4. Identifying what is at stake: The company recognizes that insurance claims can result in increased premiums; that lowered productivity can impact profits; and that lowered employee morale can impact productivity, quality, and retention.

After deciding on the problem you wish to tackle, begin building questions about it. You will find three attachments here to provide additional help in building your questions. Your goal for the analysis is to answer the questions through your sources. Finding multiple angles and perspectives is ideal so that you explore those possibilities in the final paper before settling on your recommendation.  Be sure to identify what is at stake here.

Part of the recommendation should include the counterargument and rebuttal to demonstrate you’ve considered the limitations and concerns of your solution and can still defend the recommendation regardless of potential weaknesses. Help the doubters understand that this really is the most feasible, objective, and sustainable solution.

Consumer Behavior

  1. A general overview of the article. Include an opening paragraph stating the full APA formatted reference for the article you chose. Give a brief overview of the following: thesis of the article, hypothesis, research design methods, conclusions, and recommendations.
  2. Relationship to course. How does this article relate to the knowledge within this course? How does it relate to the textbook?
  3. A critical analysis. Did the process make sense? Was enough information given to determine if results were valid? Were the statistics clear and did they support the results? Were the results generalizable to a wider population than the sample subjects?
  4. A value assessment. Based on the conclusions, what value exists in the article for a future manager in the real world?

Let’s use the keywords you brainstormed in the MIND MAP in the module to conduct three separate searches in the Opposing Viewpoints or Academic Search Ultimate or other similar databases. When conducting these searches, pay close attention to what types of sources pop up. Are they written by professionals or academics in the field? Are they articles from one of the 24-hour news networks? What formats appear (article, journal, essay, news story, video, podcast, etc.)? How old are the sources? Why does the age of different sources matter?

Take brief notes on what you see, and experiment with your keywords to broaden or narrow your search when appropriate. Jot down the titles and authors of a couple of sources from your search.

Target Market

Michelle has asked you to send her a memo that explains the target market for MM’s new product. Because a global market is under consideration, she wants you and Elena to meet for an in-depth discussion of the different characteristics of your target market before sending her the information.

Elena meets you for coffee the next morning to explain her reasons for advocating the global market. As you finish your discussion, Elena stops and says,

“We’ve discussed a lot of different market segments to target with the new product, but the choice comes back to you,” says Elena. “What’s your final decision on the target market that we should focus on? Are you going to propose that we try to market this product globally?
You sigh, knowing this is a key decision in your marketing strategy. “I appreciate our discussion today. I’m going to have to do some more research to determine the exact market and if we should go global or not.”

You know Michelle is expecting a detailed description of your targeted market segment including justification for selecting the market. You also need to remember to include your recommendation for or against marketing globally.

Create and submit a memo that fully explains (details and specifics) the market segmenting process (all four segmenting areas) and chosen target market (out of the four segmenting areas) for MM’s new product including an in-depth discussion of the four different segmenting characteristics and detailed description of your targeted market (out of the four segmenting areas) including justification for (why chosen) selecting the target market. You also need to remember to include your recommendation for or against marketing globally.

  1. What are the demographic characteristics of your target market and why are they important?
  2. Where is your target market located geographically and why is that important?
  3. What psychographic characteristics define your target market? How do these impact your marketing strategy?
  4. What behavioral characteristics are shared by your target market? Why are these important?
  5. Are you recommending to go global or stay domestic and why?

I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BASED IN THIS ARGUMENT..BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS  A problem we have in the hospitals are the high number of falls resulting in injury because of short staffing. Joint Commission reported that every year hundreds of thousands of patients fall in hospitals, and 30-50 percent resulting in injury. These patients require additional treatment and it prolongs hospital stays. A research article reports that a fall with injury added 6.3 days to the hospital stay and the average cost for a fall with injury is about $14,000 (Galbraith J, et al, 2011). I work in Progressive Care Neuro telemetry, where the risk for falls it is great because most of the population we have are with strokes, altered mental status, detox, Respiratory and Cardiac disease. When nurses are forced to work with low nurse-to-patient ratios patients fall and patient essential care is missed such as teaching, ambulation, turning, emotional support and charting. When the load increases nurses get burned out, their dissatisfaction increases every day and patients suffer from preventable injuries and inadequate care. Our hospital evaluated these problems and decided to hire more CNA and RN’s. Also, they invested in new equipment such as chair alarms, and bed alarms. All patients are required to have the alarms on, and we have to ambulate with them to the bathrooms and back.
