Unit VII Assignment: Breaking Even

Breakeven analysis uses two functions to describe the revenue and cost of a particular product. The breakeven point is the number of products that a business must produce and sell so that the money coming in is equal to the money going out. In this assignment, you will be asked to create a system of equations based on the cost and revenue of a particular business. You will solve the system to determine the business’s breakeven point.

Instructions: Imagine that you are business owner who produced a particular item to sell in your new store. Answer questions 1–10. Save all of your work to this template and submit it in Blackboard for grading.

1. Briefly explain one item that you will be producing and selling in your store.

2. How much does the item cost you to produce? Consider the cost of materials and labor.  Select an amount between $1 and $50. Round to the nearest dollar.

Cost per   item produced =

$

3. How much will you sell the product for? Select an amount between $1 and $100. The sold price must be more than what it costs to produce the item. Round to the nearest dollar.

Price per unit sold =

$

4. Write the cost function, C(x), of producing x amount of items. Assume that you have a fixed cost $5,000. Replace the “?” with the appropriate numbers.

C(x) = fixed cost + (cost per item produced)(x)

C(x) = ? + (?)(x)

5. Write the revenue function, R(x), from the sale of x items. Replace the “?” with the appropriate numbers.

R(x) = (price per item sold)(x)

R(x) = (?)(x)

6. Replace C(x) and R(x) with y. This means that the cost and revenue will be the same. Write the system of equations below.

Y = write equation found for C(x)

Y = write equation found for R(x)

7. Use the substitution method to solve the system of equations found in question 6. The solution is the breakeven point. Show each step of your work below. Round your final answer for x to the nearest whole number and use the rounded value of x to solve for y. Round y to the nearest cent or to two decimal places.

8. How many items must you sell and produce in order to break even?

9. What does the y-coordinate of the breakeven point represent?

10. How many items will you need to sell in order to make a profit of $2,500? Round up to the nearest whole number.

First, find P(x). To do this, substitute the expressions for R(x) and C(x) found in questions 4 and 5 into the equation below and simplify.

P(x) = R(x) – C(x)

Next, replace P(x) with 2500 into the equation above and solve for x. Round to the nearest whole number. Show your work below.

Answer: You need to sell ____ items in order to make a profit of $2,500.

Essay

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note: Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on the assignment.)

Scenario 1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not.

Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Scenario 3: You have two jobs, one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes, one that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two kids, one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings, one who lives two (2) miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay.

Scenario 4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you arrive and return another co-worker is already there, and you wonder whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your weekly sales meeting, you are informed of your co-workers’ outstanding sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field, and as a result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired.

Scenario 5: Professor’s Choice – problem scenario presented by your professor.

Scenario 6: Student’s Choice – Problem scenario presented by you.

Review the six-step problem solving process outlined in the webtext, based on the article “The Problem Solving Process” located at http://www.gdrc.org/decision/problem-solve.html:

  • Step One: Define the problem
  • Step Two: Analyze the problem
  • Step Three: Generate options
  • Step Four: Evaluate options
  • Step Five: Make your decision
  • Step Six: Implement and reflect

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Define the problem in the scenario that you have chosen.
  2. Analyze the problem in the scenario.
  3. Generate options for solving the problem in the scenario.
  4. Evaluate the options for solving the problem.
  5. Decide on the best option for solving the problem.
  6. Explain how you will implement the decision made and reflect on whether this option was the most effective.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • This course requires use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Based on the guidelines in SWS, “A well-researched assignment has at least as many sources as pages.” Therefore, since this assignment requires you to write at least 4-5 pages, you should include at least 4-5 references.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Recognize the hindrances to the decision-making process in order to apply problem-solving skills to a variety of situations.
  • Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.

comment and reply on the following three sources, 100 words for each.

comment and reply on the following three sources, 100 words for each.

1. After a major disruption in global politics such as 9/11, the Greek crisis, or Brexit, governments aim prevent any further slowdowns in the economy. To accomplish this goal, governments will often lower interest rates. These rates are lowered as a way of encouraging citizens to borrow capital and stimulate the economy.

Covered interest arbitrage is a process involving capitalization on the difference in interest rates between two countries while covering exchange rate risk with a forward contract. Interest rate parity, or IRP, occurs when “market forces cause interest and exchange rates to adjust such that covered interest arbitrage is no longer feasible” resulting in a state of equilibrium. If a country were to undergo a major political disruption that effects its financial markets, an investor may capitalize on the economic downturn by utilizing covered interest arbitrage. The investor can do so since the recent disruption has created a larger gap in exchange rates between that nation and the others.

2. When consumer and investor economic expectations are grim during events like 9/11, Brexit and the Greek Crisis, a decline in that country’s interest rates typically occurs followed by relatively high inflation. Forward rates are effected as a result. In situations where foreign interest rates are higher than the home country, forward rates experience a discount. The level of this discount should be proportional to the degree of differential in interest rates between the two countries in question according to the interest rate parity. This can also cause short-run combined interest arbitrage benefits until IRP occurs through forward rate adjustments. However, investor concerns about repayment feasibility due to political risk may prevent some from participating in the volatile financial market which further drives interest rates downward. A reduction in interest rates causes pressure in forward discounts downward to the same degree. Lower interest rates and inflation cause a decrease in imports and increase in exports as demand for the currency rises. This eventually leads to an appreciation in the currency value relative to level of inflation differential with trading countries according to the IFE.

3. After such large events that cause not only political and emotional unrest, the economy also takes a hit as well. This also affects the business expectations and lowers them to below what people would normally require from businesses. This causes people to be more independent and also leads to a fall in the interest of rate expectations. While that also occurs, the IRP between countries has a larger gap, and the rate increases. Since a larger gap is achieved with parity, it also causes countries to spend less money on foreign investments and focus on keeping the money in the country in order to aid their own economy. Currently, the main powers like the US and China are also wagering in a trade war and it will be quite interesting how much the IRP may increase if it continues or if there will be a second wave.

Straighten Up Business Analysis

Read: Roller Bags Case Study

ROLLER BAGS: Lightening the Load All Over The World.

In 2002, Claude Ciseria started the Straighten Up program, the premise of which was to provide backpacks with rollers for children in need. For every roller bag sold, a free roller bag would be donated promoting Ciseria’s belief that the purpose of all humans is to help others and give to those less fortunate.

Why Roller Bags?

Ciseria asserts that children in many countries have to walk miles with either a heavy backpack that adds weight to their spine or carry heavy books and other items to school in their arms, also lending to curvature of the spine. Furthermore, this damage to the spine can have life-long damaging effects as the children move into adulthood. Ciseria’s idea to provide roller bags so that children can pull their books may prevent lifelong back pain.

The Spine

Prolonged carrying of backpacks can cause scoliosis or curvature of the spine. In children, progression can be an issue and may require the use of a brace. Additionally, chronic neck and shoulder pain starts in middle school and can cause the need for inflammatory drugs throughout adulthood.

Furthermore, the constant weight of backpacks actually causes the spinal cords to compress and cause significant back pain. Compressing the spine by carrying a heavy backpack can affect how tall you one will grow. The lumbar disks, located in the lower spine, contribute to about an inch of human height. When children carry an extremely heavy backpack, 5 days a week for years, the spine is compressed causing them to shrink more quickly.

Straighten Up Program

Roller bags are produced in Ethiopia, Cuba, and Somalia and are provided to children in 20 countries. An outside firm audits the factories to ensure that the workers receive a fair wage and that children are not being exploited.

The Straighten Up program had donated 1 million roller bags by 2008. There is also a segment of the program that returns to villages and replaces worn or damaged roller bags.

How Straighten Up Works

Ciseria and his partners first established partnerships with global humanitarian organizations that have a long history with the communities in which they serve. Using the criterion of economic, health, and educational conditions and the needs of the community, the program identifies communities with the most need. Straighten Up ensures that the program will not have a negative effect on local businesses and that the children who receive the roller bags also receive support with health and educational needs.

Critiques of the Program

There has been concern over whether Straighten Up hurts local businesses that also make bags or backpacks. Critical needs require donations, but long-term, it may be better to teach local businesses to make the roller bags and develop entrepreneurs who would generate revenue to help the community.

Additionally, as a privately held company, Straighten Up is not required to provide financial statements. It may be beneficial to customers and stakeholders to know how much it costs to make each roller bag, as well as how much it costs to give away each bag. Without transparent financial reports, the program has been criticized as being more or a marketing ploy than a corporate social responsibility program.

Imagine you are an I/O psychologist and have been asked to evaluate this company.

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word formal evaluation of this company. Include the following:

  • Outline the stakeholders of the organization, and identify ways for managing them.
  • Describe the ethical business practices this program encompasses. Explain how these business practices are similar to or different from ethical business practices in the United States.
  • Explain organizational community responsibility, and justify whether this program complies with this requirement.
  • Describe recommendations for ethical business sustainability practices to meet the needs of the future.
  • Recommend strategies, based on psychological concepts, for ethically addressing employee- and consumer-related concerns. Describe how this feedback can be implemented in the program.
  • Evaluate the program’s methods of marketing and advertising. Determine whether the program’s methods comply with ethical guidelines. Describe ways to ensure that their marketing is honest and transparent.

Include a minimum of three scholarly peer-reviewed sources.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

2-3 page paper

For this paper you must cite and reference 2 sources. The paper should be 2–3 pages and written using current APA format. Your paper should address the following:

a. How would you prepare for the following situation?  (provide realistic examples and details for safety and survival)

(Scenario) At this moment, you are sitting at home working on your WCU class. Suddenly, the National Weather Bureau sends an alert across your cell phone—a tornado is headed your way. You have 15 minutes before touchdown in your neighborhood. What is your plan? This is a ‘shelter in place’ scenario, you cannot outrun the tornado. Identify a safe place in your home to take shelter.

You must include research. Cite and reference two sources and explain the recommended safety measures in a tornado emergency and how you would apply them to your specific living arrangements.

b. How prepared are you in the event of a disaster? Describe your level of disaster preparedness using specific examples and references to your “go-bag” and preparedness checklist assignments.

Example: “I am more prepared for a water-related disaster than a fire-related disaster even though I live in a highly secluded, forested area. I have a boat as transportation in the event of flooding, but I do not have rain barrels or fire barrier supplies on hand.”

Example:  “There were many missing items on my preparedness checklist. I realized that I do not own a flashlight. If I had to use my phone as a light it would drain the battery very quickly.

c. Reflect on how prepared you were before this class and compare it with how prepared you are now.

· Have you acquired any new emergency items?

· Do you plan to take any additional trainings or certification courses?

· Have you shared your knowledge with friends and family?

Accounting

  Fraud Investigation Methods and Procedures

For both scenarios below, devise a fraud investigation plan by answering the following questions:

  1. Discuss      the appropriate investigative methods/techniques that you would suggest.
  2. Provide      a detailed plan on how you would develop and carry out the investigation.
  3. Provide      support (including the use of external citations) for why the      method/technique would be useful in the situation.
  4. Prepare      a plan for collecting evidence.

Burger Palace

Assume you are a Burger Palace restaurant franchiser with four restaurants operated by restaurant managers in the Charlotte metropolitan area. After initially planning and launching a location, the managers are generally able to follow franchise processes and procedures and run their locations without your oversight. As a result, you are not involved in the day-to-day activities of each restaurant.

You were initially pleased with the growth and overall performance of the most recent launch in Huntersville. The restaurant generated consistent margins on sales growth of 8% plus month-over-month, which exceeded your initial expectations. However, things appeared to shift slightly over the last quarter. Sales growth has remained strong (only slightly down from the initial growth, which is typical in the restaurant business). However, you have noticed a reduction in your margins. One of the causes appears to be an increased inventory burn in your gourmet coffee line of products, which is out of line with the sales growth figures. You have recently brought this matter to the attention of the restaurant manager, who has assured you that this type of margin decline is normal (and expected) as the increased volume has led to more waste due to drink ordering errors while handling peak-level volumes. Your manager also explained that the increased volume has led to hiring needs, which have been filled by inexperienced assistant managers, which is also leading to further product waste.

Your experience suggests that the explanation provided does not adequately explain the situation. You suspect that fraudulent activity, such as free product or non-register sales, may be occurring at the Huntersville restaurant.

The Zippy Mart

The downtown Arlington Zippy Mart gas station and convenience store operates largely on a cash basis, with more than 2/3 of all transactions occurring with cash. The assistant manager has reported a discrepancy between the daily cash receipts and week-end fuel inventory. She is not sure if there is a theft issue, faulty fuel measurements, tank leakage, or if the fuel delivery trucks are shorting them fuel.

Requirements:

  • Write      a paper of 6 pages in length (double-spaced), not counting the title and      reference pages, which you must include.
  • Use      terms, evidence, and concepts from class readings, including professional      business language.
  • Cite      at least 5-6 sources for this assignment, outside of the textbook.
  • Format      your paper according to APA format.
