Bioethics

1. State the Premises (Argument) of SINGER in about a page long. The conclusion has been stated below and that is where you can find the premises of SINGER’S argument.

Conclusion: Anything with the potential to become a person (full-fledged human being) does not have the right to life (Singer, “The Moral Status of the Embryo,” p. 87, first full paragraph).

The whole argument is in the first full paragraph, although you will need some ideas from the previous pages to understand “full-fledged human being”, which equals being a person. Person is a common term in philosophy that commonly denotes a “rational agent” or “a being with the capacity to reason.” The term is not without some controversy, like many things in philosophy, and we will see with Sherwin that she does not use it in exactly this sense.

To help you with the argument, the idea is that we can move from something being a potential person to have the same or similar properties as an actual person, a full-fledged human being that can exercise their capacity to reason. This argument questions that move.

2. Summarize SINGER’S Article in another paper. Attached is a summary example for the Storch piece. Use this as an exemplar on how to do the summary of SINGER. The point is to find the main arguments or argument and articulate them clearly. You are not supposed to be exhaustive in the summary, but the reader should have a clear idea of what is argued in the piece and how it is argued. If the author presents a key objection or an opposing view, be sure to include that as well in the summary. Each summary should be between one to two pages, less than that is not acceptable, but having more than two pages is fine. Just do not go on too long, make it be a clear summary, articulating the main thesis of the piece and the problem being discussed as well as the key arguments.

Assignment: The Impact of Standardized Nursing Terminology

Among the Resources in this module is the Rutherford (2008) article Standardized Nursing Language: What Does It Mean for Nursing Practice? In this article, the author recounts a visit to a local hospital to view the recent implementation of a new coding system.

During the visit, one of the nurses commented to her, “We document our care using standardized nursing languages but we don’t fully understand why we do” (Rutherford, 2008, para. 1).

How would you respond to a comment such as this one?

To Prepare:

  • Review the concepts of informatics as presented in the Resources, particularly Rutherford, M. (2008) Standardized Nursing Language: What Does It Mean for Nursing Practice?
  • Reflect on the role of a nurse leader as a knowledge worker.
  • Consider how knowledge may be informed by data that is collected/accessed.

The Assignment:

In a 2- to 3-page paper, address the following:

  • Explain how you would inform this nurse (and others) of the importance of standardized nursing terminologies.
  • Describe the benefits and challenges of implementing standardized nursing terminologies in nursing practice. Be specific and provide examples.
  • Be sure to support your paper with peer-reviewed research on standardized nursing terminologies that you consulted from the Walden Library.

GLISI Module Assignment

Modules developed by the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI) are used as one of the foundational elements for the class. There are four modules used for the course.  Each module has either 3 or 4 topics.  You are to study the entire module and for each topic, write a reflection paper consisting of an overview of the task and YOUR thoughts on how it can be used in a real school setting to analyze data and create school improvement.  In addition, you should choose ONE topic for each module and complete that topic with a small group of your colleagues. For example, if you choose Five Whys for the Leading the Team To Analyze Root Causes module, you should select 4 to 6 colleagues, and lead them through a activity (you choose topic). The writing assignment for the module you choose for colleagues should include the write-up of the actual activity describing the group and how the activity worked with them.  Somebody is going to ask, “How long should the reflection paper be?”  My standard answer is long enough to appropriately cover the assignment.  For the topics that do not include your colleagues, you should be able to complete the assignment in 1.5 to 2 pages.  For the module used with your colleagues, the length will probably be 3-4 pages.  Assignments should not exceed 10 pages in length.

Each assignment should include:

  • One paper for each topic (1.5-2 pages each x 3 or 4 topics)
  • One paper summary of the activity you implemented (3-4 pages)
