Peru Geo #5

For this particular assignment, much of the data and information that you provide MUST come from the U.S. CIA’s World Factbook, which is available online at: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html (Links to an external site.).

However, you will need to use other sources for some additional information, as well as maps, pictures, and other images that are also expected to be included.  Be aware that you will need to provide a proper bibliographic citation for all sources (including the World Factbook) that you used for the assignment on a final “Sources” slide—this includes the sources of maps and pictures, etc.—so be sure to keep track of these as you complete the assignment.

As with the previous assignments, you will be expected to put all of the information requested for this assignment in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation document.  Once again, you must let the instructor know IN ADVANCE if you have any problems with being able to use this software.

Your presentation must include the following slides with the information as specified below:

Slide #1The State. For slide #1, you should go to the “Government” section of the CIA World Factbook and find and report the following:

  1. Like the first assignment, your first slide must include your name and the various toponyms of the place (i.e., “conventional long form,” “local long form,” etc.). Note: If for some reason your place is not an independent sovereign state, then you should provide the name of the country to which it has dependency status.
  2. Insert an image of the flag that represents the government of this place and provide a brief explanation of what its key elements represent (e.g., why certain colors or why certain symbols?).
  3. Its date of independence (if appropriate) and its national holiday.
  4. Toponym of the capital and at least one picture that illustrates some aspect of the cultural landscape of the capital. Include a brief caption to specify what the picture represents.
  5. Type of government and the number administrative divisions/units.
  6. Include a map that shows the territorial boundaries of this state and its capital.

Slide #2The Dominant Nation. For slide #2, you should go to the “People and Society” section of the CIA World Factbook and find and report the following:

  1. The name (as given in the English language) to refer to the “nationality” of the people of this place.
  2. From the “Ethnic groups” information provided (below “Nationality”), the percentage of the population that is specifically identified as being of this nationality. Then, calculate the actual number of people that this group represents by multiplying the current total population by this percentage.  Note: If this specific nationality is not included as an “ethnic group,” then use the information for the largest “ethnic group” listed, and be sure to give the name of this group.
  3. Summarize the ways in which citizenship is determined within this state in order to be considered a member of this nation.
  4. Using the information provided in the “Introduction” section of your place’s CIA World Factbook page, as well as information from other sources as needed, write a one paragraph description (at least 50 words) of this nationality and how this group came to be the dominant nation within this state.
  5. Include at least one picture that illustrates some aspect of the cultural landscape in this state that is specifically associated with this nation of people. Include a caption that briefly explains what aspect of the nation’s culture it represents.
  6. Brief summaries/explanations for at least 3 of the following additional elements about this nation:
    • The most common religion/spiritual faith practiced within this group.
    • The most common way of making a living.
    • Example of a particular type of food preference.
    • Example of a particular style of clothing preference.
    • Example of a particular style of music preference.
    • Example of an important cultural event or tradition.

Slide #3Ethnic Groups & Stateless Nations. Find information about at least 2 of the minority “ethnic groups” (i.e., “stateless nations”) that live within this place.  The “Ethnic groups” information in the CIA World Factbook “People and Society” section will identify some of these for you, but you may need to consult other sources for additional information.  For each group, include the following:

  1. The name of each ethnic group, its estimated percentage of the population in this place, and then calculate the approximate number of people in this group based on the current total population of the place from the World Factbook.
  2. Provide a brief description of EACH group (at least 30 words for each) that includes at least 3 specific examples of the core traits of the group (e.g., language, religion, phenotypes, etc.).
  3. Include at least one image for EACH group that illustrates an important aspect of it (e.g., cultural landscape, some distinctive cultural trait or practice, etc.). Provide a caption for each image that briefly explains what it is a picture of and why it is an important aspect of the ethnic group.
  4. Include a map that identifies the area(s) of the country with which each group is most strongly associated.

Slide #4: Political Geography in the News. Find and read a recent news article that discusses an example of a political issue in this place.  Write a summary of this article (at least 100 words) and, in the process, discuss at least 2 specific examples of concepts or issues from our course material that this article illustrates about the political geography of this place.  Add at least one picture either from the article or from another source that helps illustrate an aspect of this article and its connection with this place’s political geography.

Slide #5Nation-State Analysis. Using the information you have gathered for the previous slides (and previous assignment slides, if appropriate), write an analysis (at least 100 words) regarding the extent to which this place represents a “nation-state,” as specifically defined and discussed in the course content.  You must state whether or not it you think it can appropriately be called a “nation-state” based upon the information regarding this concept from the course material, and if not, what other term is more appropriate (e.g., multinational state, multiethnic state, etc.).  Reference specific pieces of evidence from the previous slides or other sources to support your analysis.  Give at least one example of the potential cultural challenges or issues that you think this place is likely going to face in the near future as a result of its status in this regard.

Slide #6: Territorial Morphology. Using the information provided in the “Government” section of the World Factbook page for this place, create a slide that provides the following information about the government of this place:

  1. Insert a map of this place that clearly illustrates its territorial morphology. This should include not only its primary territorial boundaries, but also designate its capital city and its administrative divisions/units.
  2. Write a paragraph (at least 75 words) in which you analyze the territorial morphology of this place. State which specific type (or perhaps types) you think it represents and explain why.

Slide #7Centripetal vs. Centrifugal Forces: Using information from a variety of sources, create a slide that includes the following:

  1. Describe at least one specific example of a centripetal force that you think is currently helping to promote unity and cohesion within this place. Include an image of this place (picture, map, etc.) that helps illustrate this centripetal force.
  2. Describe at least one specific example of a centrifugal force that you think is currently contributing to destabilizing this place and could possibly cause it to fragment. Include an image of this place (picture, map, etc.) that helps illustrate this centrifugal force.
  3. Write a one paragraph assessment (at least 75 words) of the centripetal versus centrifugal forces in this place. Do you think these forces are equally balanced or does one set of these forces seem stronger to you than the other?  Ultimately, do you think this place will remain united politically or is it likely to fragment at some point in the near future?

Slide #8: Place Reflection. On this slide, you simply need to write a personal reflection (at least 100 words) in which you discuss the top 3 things (or more, if you prefer) that you learned about this place from this assignment.  You may discuss examples of things that you personally found interesting or examples of topics that you think are critically important for understanding cultural and political geography of this place.

Slide #9Sources. Your final slide should include a listing of all of the sources that you used for this assignment.  You should list each source using a PROPER bibliographic citation in either APA or MLA style.  This includes the CIA World Factbook, as well as the course textbook or class notes, if used.  NOTE! Simply pasting the URL address for a webpage is NOT a proper bibliographic citation.  Please let me know in advance if you need any help with making proper citations.

Discussion Board: Dropping the Bomb || Group 2 || Lesson 8

Since 1945, Americans have been debating the necessity of dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. Some historians argue that dropping the bombs ended the war, saved American and Japanese lives, and avoided an invasion of Japan. Other historians believe Japan would likely have surrendered without the use of the bombs. After reading the text and viewing the materials provide, answer the following questions in your discussion posts: Of all the options facing the United States, which one should Truman have pursued? Was the United States justified in dropping the bombs on Japan? Why or why not? Did the United States fully understand the weapons before using them? Fully explain your answers.

To receive full credit for this assignment your post must:

  1. Address the questions asked in the paragraph above in at least a 300-word post and cite all outside sources appropriately
  2. In your initial post, include at least one interesting question the readings raised for you

Better Data Management Helps the Toronto Globe and Mail Reach Its Customers

Write 2-3 page evaluation on the reading below:

Have you ever received a new subscription offer from a newspaper or magazine to which you already subscribed? In addition to being an annoyance, sending a superfluous offer to customers increases marketing costs. So why is this happening? The answer is probably because of poor data management. The newspaper most likely was unable to match its existing subscriber list, which it maintained in one place, with another file containing its list of marketing prospects.

The Globe and Mail, based in Toronto, Canada, was one of those publications that had these problems. In print for 167 years, it is Canada’s largest newspaper, with a cumulative six-day readership of nearly 3.3 million. The paper has a very ambitious marketing program, viewing every Canadian household that does not already subscribe as a prospect. But it has had trouble housing and managing the data on these prospects.

Running a major newspaper requires managing huge amounts of data, including circulation data, advertising revenue data, marketing prospect and “do not contact” data, and data on logistics and deliveries. Add to that the data required to run any business, including finance and human resources data.

For many years The Globe and Mail housed much of its data in a mainframe system where the data were not easy to access and analyze. If users needed any information, they had to extract the data from the mainframe and bring it to one of a number of local databases for analysis, including those maintained in Microsoft Access, Foxbase Pro, and Microsoft Excel. This practice created numerous pockets of data maintained in isolated databases for specific purposes but no central repository where the most up-to-date data could be accessed from a single place. With data scattered in so many different systems throughout the company, it was very difficult to cross-reference subscribers with prospects when developing the mailing list for a marketing campaign. There were also security issues: The Globe and Mail collects and stores customer payment information, and housing this confidential data in multiple places makes it more difficult to ensure that proper data security controls are in place.

In 2002, the newspaper began addressing these problems by implementing a SAP enterprise system with a SAP NetWeaver BW data warehouse that would contain all of the company’s data from its various data sources in a single location where the data could be easily accessed and analyzed by business users.

The first data to populate the data warehouse was advertising sales data, which is a major source of revenue. In 2007, The Globe and Mail added circulation data to the warehouse, including delivery data details such as how much time is left on a customer’s subscription and data on marketing prospects from third-party sources. Data on prospects were added to the warehouse as well.

With all these data in a single place, the paper can easily match prospect and customer data to avoid targeting existing customers with subscription promotions. It can also match the data to “do not contact” and delivery area data to determine if a newspaper can be delivered or whether a customer should be targeted with a promotion for a digital subscription.

Despite the obvious benefits of the new data warehouse, not all of The Globe and Mail’s business users immediately came on board. People who were used to extracting data from the mainframe system and manipulating it in their own local databases or file continued to do the same thing after the data warehouse went live. They did not understand the concept of a data warehouse or the need to work towards enterprise-wide data management. The Globe and Mail’s management decided to tackle this new problem by educating its users, especially its marketing professionals, with the value of having all the organization’s data in a data warehouse and the tools available for accessing and analyzing these data.

The Globe and Mail’s new data analysis capabilities produced savings from efficiencies and streamlined processes that paid for the investment in one year. Marketing campaigns that previously took two weeks to complete now only take one day. The newspaper can determine its saturation rates in a given area to guide its marketing plans. And there are fewer complaints from subscribers and potential subscribers about being contacted unnecessarily.

To capitalize further on data management and analytics, The Globe and Mail turned to the cloud. A key business goal for the company was to beef up online content and increase the paper’s digital subscriber base. The Globe and Mail devoted more resources to digital online content, with different subscription rates for online-only customers and print customers. To aggressively court digital subscribers, The Globe and Mail had to mine its clickstream data logging user actions on the Web to target potential digital subscribers based not only on their specific interests but also their interests on a particular day. The volume of data was too large to be handled by the company’s conventional Oracle database. The solution was to use SAP HANA ONE in-memory computing software running on the Amazon Web Services cloud computing platform, which accelerates data analysis and processing by storing data in the computer’s main memory (RAM) rather than on external storage devices. This cloud solution lets The Globe and Mail pay for only what capabilities it uses on an hourly basis.

Annotated Bibilography

This assignment will be one of several throughout the Ph.D. program that we use to help you prepare for the dissertation process. One of the core competencies necessary to succeed in a doctoral program is the ability to identify other research that pertains to your own. This means you’ll have to identify related research, read the papers, and assimilate prior work into your research. An annotated bibliography helps you develop and hone these research skills.

The paper must be in a correct APA format, use correct grammar, and will need to include at least five (5) resources, ALL of which must:

1) Be current. Published within the last few years.

2) Be peer-reviewed.

3) Relate directly to defense in depth in the context of protecting National Infrastructure.

Remember that an annotation is not the same as an abstract. Abstracts are descriptive. Your annotations are to be evaluative and critical. Give me enough information for me to decide if I’m interested enough to read the paper, and also how you perceive the paper. Do not go skimpy on these annotations, but DO NOT write too much here. Quality is far more critical than quantity. This exercise is for each of you to demonstrate that you can identify, categorize, and digest multiple research papers.

The resources you choose must be peer-reviewed. That means the paper must have undergone a formal peer review before being published in a journal or presented at a conference. You must ensure that your resources have undergone rigorous reviews. In most cases, you can find out the review process for a conference or journal by visiting the appropriate web site. Do not merely assume that a resource is peer-reviewed – check it out.

Transgenders base their sexual preference on sexuality feelings and personal reasoning. In reality not all humans will be the same so a new change has been developed; in which being transgender is the world’s new change today. Certain people in today’s society have yet to accept them and they behave cruelly towards them. Transgenders have their reasons and purposes for becoming who they are and always wanted to be because they have to be comfortable with themselves if not can cause mental health issues. They undergo many procedures and through a process to express themselves, through the correct and believable way of their mindsets. Energy Complexes and Transitions to Electromobility

Looking back on our earlier coverage of the eclipse of the coal  complex by the oil complex starting with World War I, it is worth  remembering the pitfalls of technology innovation and infrastructure  development. As you recall the transition from coal to oil in transport,  and the geopolitics of entrenched complexes, it is never simply the  technical feasibility of an energy source or propulsion technology that  determines which energy complex wins. The politics of these sectors  matter a great deal for who gets financed, whose infrastructures get  built (and whose do not), and which customers build out the demand for  the energy source or technology (e.g., large governmental actors like  navies, or upper class progressive customers).

Consider that Elon Musk of Tesla Motors has released all patents (Links to an external site.)  related to his electric car innovations in the hope that it will  stimulate greater electric car development across the world, giving his nascent complex a footing against that led by the oil majors from Houston (Links to an external site.).  Yet, the components of electric cars are subject to geopolitical  rivalries, such as competition for rare earth elements that go into the  batteries and permanent magnet motors of electric car engines. Not the  least of these rivalries concerns the interests of the private oil  companies, which may wish to see their gasoline sales continue, and the  Chinese government which dominates the mining of rare earth elements at  present.

Bearing these considerations in mind and after reviewing this  module’s readings as well as reflecting upon all of the modules’ review  of how energy politics plays out, evaluate the questions below using  that information that best helps your evaluation.

  • In your opinion, can alternative energies and technologies such as  wind, solar, and electric vehicles displace the conventional fossil  fuels complex (i.e., do you agree or disagree with Vaclav Smil)?  For  example, what kinds of geopolitical and energy complex rivalries can you  identify as attending any transition from oil-fueled vehicles to  all-electric ones, and how might these rivalries be overcome?
  • In your estimation then, are all-electric vehicles, therefore, a realistic alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles?
