Case Study Peer Comments

In each case study, you are expected to respond to at least two peers’ postings in the classroom.  Comments should add new information to the discussion or provide an assessment of your peer’s posting. Peer comments are due by Sunday midnight.

Follow-up postings to peers are significant and add value to the discussion. Any questions posed by instructor are answered. Acceptable peer posts can be an elaboration on a previous comment, an explanation to help a fellow student, or a point of debate all which provide substantive contributions to the discussions.

Compare Unions in Public versus Private Organizations

Unions play a role in both private and public organizations in the United States.  During the country’s height in manufacturing, unions were predominant in many organizations such as steel mills, auto manufacturers, etc. The 1960s began to show a rise in union activity and membership in public organizations. It was noted that there were dissimilarities in collective bargaining between public-sector and private sector organizations. Distinctions existed both in the issues that were placed on the table for collective bargaining but also the processes that were used.

In Microsoft PowerPoint or Word create a Poster presentation that compares and contrasts labor relations and union activity in private versus public organizations. Electronic posters can be a series of PowerPoint slides or linked Word documents that cover the required sections. On your poster, depict the changes that have occurred in union organizing in both private and public sector organizations and the impact this has had on each type of organization as well as the role of human resources.

Include a title for your poster. Incorporate graphics such as illustrations, photographs, and drawings that support your presentation and make it interesting and understandable. Include your “speaker notes.” The speaker notes may be comprised of brief paragraphs or bulleted lists.
The poster should be neat and presentable and free of errors in capitalization, usage, punctuation, or spelling. All sources for background information and for all borrowed graphics are cited on the front of the poster.

Support your poster presentation with at least five (5) scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources may be included.

Length: May vary

Be sure to include citations for quotations and paraphrases with references in APA format and style where appropriate.

Application: Analysis of Quantitative and Qualitative Data

In order to provide meaningful results, research processes must be carefully selected and appropriate for the data being analyzed. Statistical programs such as SPSS are frequently utilized by researchers to conduct the analysis of large data sets. These data are organized to provide meaningful interpretation and often include descriptive statistics. Qualitative analysis is completed using content analysis, looking for patterns and themes that emerge from the data. Individual experiences described in interviews and focus groups are considered data and are often provided as examples to support the results in the study publication. Whether you will engage in either quantitative or qualitative research, it is likely that you will encounter both types of studies in the literature. As a nursing professional, being able to analyze and interpret both types of research designs will be important to affect nursing practice that promotes positive health outcomes in
quality of care and patient safety.

For Part 1 of this Assignment, you will conduct descriptive statistical analyses using quantitative data. For Part 2 of this Assignment, you will conduct content coding to analyze qualitative data. Please review the Instructions: Quantitative Analysis Assignment and Instructions: Content Coding of Student Pet Peeves in this week’s resources to review how to complete both parts of this Assignment.

Part 1: Quantitative Analyses

  • Follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the Instructions: Quantitative Analysis Assignment document in this week’s resources on using the Excel program to conduct descriptive analyses of quantitative data.
  • The Quantitative Data Excel Assignment spreadsheet that you will need is in the resources for this week.
  • For this Assignment, you will need to describe the findings from your analyses and summarize what they tell you about these patients and the extent of the adverse events they experienced during their hospitalization by completing the Summary Data Analysis Form in this week’s resources.

Part 2: Qualitative Analyses

  • Follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the Instructions: Content Coding of Student Pet Peeves document in this week’s resources. The document provides detailed instructions on the step-by-step process of conducting the content analysis for this part of the Assignment.
  • Access the Perceived Pet Peeves Data document located in this week’s resources that includes the narrative descriptions of 10 students about their “pet peeves’ in courses they have taken. (In other words, what are the things that detracted from their learning experiences in these courses)?
    • The analytic method you will use to analyze the narrative data for this Assignment is called content analysis. It requires you to read each student’s narrative and then code its content using thematic categories on a coding sheet.
  • Access the Code Sheet: Student Pet Peeve Data document located in this week’s resources to carry out the coding as defined in the instructions.
    • For the written part of this assignment, you will need to describe the most common types of “pet peeves” that students have about their courses.

Decision making course

Pacific Palm Oil Company (PPO)

Review the requirements located in the Brainstorming Discussions Module.

MDQ STEP THREE: BUILDING THE DECISION

GATHERING INFORMATION

The purpose of this week’s brainstorming discussions is to address the type of information PPO needs to gather in coming up with creative alternatives to use in the MDQ decision making model. Useful information involves researching anything that the manager needs to know that might influence the decision making process. This includes experience from past or future situations as well as factual information. Even though the manager has no control over future events, information needs to be gathered to anticipate outcomes, consequences or actions when acting on PPO’s alternatives.

CREATING ALTERNATIVES:

In Building the Decision, the manager will create FOUR viable alternatives. The case study mentions several obvious alternatives, such as:

  • Obtaining a bank loan
  • Applying for another government loan
  • Educating the public
  • Setting up an Orangutan Sanctuary
  • Harvesting deforested land

However, NONE of these alternatives are strong enough on their own. The manager must look for ways to combine them with other possibilities to make stronger alternatives. One of the things the manager needs to consider is how to raise money. The expectation is to create alternatives that are creative, demonstrate critical thinking, use additional research, and meet as many of the objectives as possible.

1. By WEDNESDAY, complete the following:

  • All conclusions, justifications, reasoning, and explanations must be supported with course material in the form of APA in-text citations (page/paragraph numbers required) and a reference list.
  • Discuss in one paragraph the type of information the manager needs to gather for PPO.  Discuss the biases and traps that should be avoided.
  • Create FOUR possible alternatives for PPO. Discuss each of these alternatives in separate paragraphs by explaining the alternative in detail, pointing out the biases, and potential consequences.  Additional research will be required to support their viability.
