Benevolent suicide, can be is defined as self sacrifice for the greater good. Analyzing this act in terms of being ethically permissible, one would assume the loss of one life is far less devastating than the loss of many. As a Soldier in the United Stated States Army, self sacrifice is something Soldiers inevitably agree to when we raise our right hand swearing to defend the United States from enemies both foreign and domestic. The battlefield is a very common place where Soldiers risk their lives to ultimately save countless lives of others along with our personal freedoms. There are numerous cases where Soldiers have sacrificed their safety, limbs, livelihood, and died honorably for the greater good. In these instances, I agree with self sacrifice because the number of lives saved outweighed those that were lost. Soldiers who die honorably defending our country, families are well taken care of with the issuance of death gratuities along with a healthy sized life insurance pay out. Money can not replace a life but their families will be taken care of during their bereavement period as well as long after. 

However, even though I believe self sacrifice is ethically permissible, I do not personally agreed with other forms of suicide that do not coincide with saving or benefiting the greater good. On January 16, 2013 my life changed forever. It was the day I found out my brother committed suicide. I was devastated and completely at a loss for words. My brother was 22 years old when he took his life. This form Suicide is a subject that hits deep with the depths of my heart. Before my brothers death, suicide was not a subject I focused on. Based on my ethical reasoning, this type of suicide is an act that I strongly disagree with because taking one’s life in this instance did more harm than good. My parents lost a child and I lost a sibling. Most of my immediate family including myself fell into a deep state of depression. There was nothing honorable about his death. He suffered from mental issues and thought ending his life was the answer. Little did he know how much hurt, pain and debt his death caused our family. My brother did not have life insurance and all of his funeral cost came out of pocket. Most of family members pitched in but my father still has an outstanding balance with the funeral home after 3 years of monthly payments. 

Ethical reasoning varies from person to person as well as culture to culture. Therefore there is no definite answer as to what’s right or what’s wrong. Opinions are variables that are constantly changing. We may have similar views on certain behaviors but who really knows what’s generally ethically right or ethically wrong in terms of personal sacrifice or any form or taking one’s life.
