Psychology professionals are privy to information of a highly personal nature. Ethical and legal standards exist to protect confidentiality of personal information. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) are legal standards that provide guidance on protecting personal information in clinical, research, and education settings. Advances in technology have influenced the nature of privacy, in both the collection and storage of information.
