THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT, INTERNAL PROFILE, AND SWOT

Simulation

Wonder Company Simulation

Simulation

The Module 2 SLP requires that you continue with the scenario and simulation you began in the Module 1 SLP.

SCENARIO CONTINUATION

SLP2 – It is January 15, 2017. You have finished analyzing the performance of the Wonder Company, and you have submitted the report requested by your CEO, Sally Smothers. You are ready to move forward to 2017, but then…..

….as you turn on the TV, you notice something very strange. You recognize that the date is January 1, 2013, and that you get to make the decisions for the Wonder Company for the 4-year period beginning with 2013. Your challenge is to do better than Joe Thomas.

At the beginning of each year (2013-2016), you will determine your pricing, your R&D allocations, and whether or not to discontinue any products. You are required to make your decisions for each year, and to report your results to see what happened. You must keep track of your decisions, making specific notes supporting each of your decisions.

Run the Wonder Co. simulation through the end of 2016. When you are finished, the date will be December 31, 2016. What is your total Score? Did you do better than Joe Thomas?

You organize your notes about your decisions, your analysis, and your reasoning into a well-written report.

Session Long Project

Run the Wonder Company simulation with your strategy, making decisions year by year for prices and R&D allocations. Write a 6- to 7-page paper, not including cover and reference pages, in which you discuss the decisions and the results for each year. Discuss why you did better (or worse) than Joe Thomas.

KEYS TO THE ASSIGNMENT

The key aspects of this assignment that should be covered and taken into account in preparing your paper include:

  • As you run the simulation, keep track of your decisions and the results – both financial and marketing. Copy and paste the results into Excel or into a Word document. You will also want to record the information that you get from the Advisor. Make a note of your Final Total Score.
  • Include your Final Total Score, some tables, and/or graphs showing key results. Using sound logic, be sure to clearly explain the differences from Joe.
  • Remember that the key here is quality of analysis.
  • Time Line Summary:

SLP1

  • 2016: You are hired on December 31, 2016.
  • Turned in first report to the CEO on January 15, 2017.

SLP2

  • You again find yourself in a Time Warp that takes you back to January 1, 2013.
  • You revise the decisions made by Joe for 2013 – 2016. You make new decisions each year.
  • December 31, 2016 – You have gone through all four years, and you write your second report to summarize how you did.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated using the grading rubric.

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

Please note the following tips and suggestions:

  • Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 6-7 pages of analysis described above:
    • Use section headings as appropriate. Use graphs, charts, or figures strategically – but do not use these as “space fillers.” Include large graphs, etc., as an Appendix instead.
    • Cite and reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you paraphrase. This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes, and citations for that information which you have “borrowed” or paraphrased from other sources.

Effectiveness of correctional rehabilitation

Assignment Details

According to the Lizman, Matthews, and Reyes (2014) in What Works? Short-Term, In-Custody Treatment Programs, there are a number of risk-needs-responsivity model programs that have shown significant promise to effect real change in long-term offender rehabilitation. However, in this article, the authors are more concerned with the successful application of such programs inside short-term correctional settings, such as jails or detention centers.

After reviewing the merits of the article, use proper APA format and at least 3 academic sources to write a 4–6-page response that focuses on the overall effectiveness of correctional rehabilitation.

  • Select 3 of the following program types, and discuss the effectiveness of these specific correctional rehabilitation programs:
    • Cognitive behavioral therapy
    • Educational and vocational programs
    • Substance and alcohol abuse treatment
    • Faith-based programs
    • Mental illness treatment programs
  • Provide an example of each type of program currently being used in correctional facilities.
  • How is the risk-needs-responsivity model applied to the 3 types of programs that you selected?
  • What are the determining factors in assessing the effectiveness of these programs, including the limitations?

Discussion

Please read the attached articles to answer question 2

We’ve read some interesting articles this week as well as the Appendix in Pete Simi’s book about making contact and gathering information on the groups he has studied.

For this forum, I’d like you to think about the kinds of research methods you would use for a particular research question. But here’s the rub: you have to come up with the question. Don’t get too hung up on this, but think about what interests you in the study of hate groups and group violence. For example, do you wonder about how people are recruited into hate groups? Do you wonder how many hate groups there are in the U.S. (or around the world), and whether that number is growing? Perhaps you wonder how the current American political scene influences hate group membership. Task 1 for this forum is to come up with a question similar to any of these or that relates somehow to what we’re studying. You don’t need to get too in depth with the question. Just tell everyone what’s on your mind.

Then, task 2 in this forum is to describe how you would research that question. Two of our readings this week gave us the pros and cons of using qualitative or quantitative methods in criminological research. What kind of method(s) would you use to answer your question? Would you survey respondents? Interview them? Use existing data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report or from the Southern Poverty Law Center? Remember, you can combine methods if you think that would be helpful.

Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography

The purpose of this assignment is to get you to the full range of academic and general secondary research tools available to you, and get you some experience searching them.

An annotated works cited provides a brief summary of the contents of each book, article, interview, Internet document, film, or video included in the list. The annotation (placed below each citation) describes the essential details of the work so that future researchers referring to an entry will be able to make an informed decision about using the text.

For this assignment, you must collect and read 6 academic sources related to your argument topic. You will be expected to check out sources from the library and to consult online sources. Be sure to find sources you will have access to throughout the rest of the semester. If you find a journal article, make sure you have a paper copy or can save and access a copy on your computer.

Type of Source   Minimum Number of Sources   Comments:
Academic Journal or Periodical articles   2 These articles must be from a peer-reviewed or referenced journal (i.e. an “Academic Journal”). [Note: if you are using a scanned electronic copy (i.e. there exists a print versionsomewhere and this is a copy), you can treat it as a “print” source. If, however, the article comesfrom an online-only publication, there is often a specific method of citing this material that isdifferent from the “print” version.
Books/Volumes     1 Can be paper, electronic, or microform [Note: if you are using an e-book, there is often a specific method of citing this material that is different from the “print” version.
Popular News Source   1 Print Newspapers, Internet News Sites (e.g. CNN Online, The New York Times Online, The Wall Street Journal Online, etc.) [Note: If a news source has both print content and online content, be sure you are using the correct citation for the version of the source you are using], Television or Radio news program transcripts, News Magazines (e.g. Time, NewsWeek, etc.).
Online Database/Internet Website     2 The Internet source you choose should be considered a scholarly resource, if at all possible [note: if you wish to use web-sites that are not considered “scholarly” sources (e.g. WikiPedia or various manufacture/organization web-sites comes to mind), you must clearly indicate that this source is of a dubious/questionable/potentially biased nature].

Keep in mind that acceptable sources DO NOT include:

  • Encyclopedia entries (including Wikipedia)-good for a quick search to get up to speed, but never to be cited or used in academic papers.
  • Internet only sources that are not notably scholarly or expert (i.e. Joe Bob’s House of Home Remedies).

Good online sources include those that you find using the Steen Library’s online databases and journals. Remember that the library staff is there to help you. If you go to the library and ask to speak with a librarian in your subject area, the desk staff will find a librarian to come and assist you.

Each entry will contain the following:

  • A complete, correct MLA citation for the work, including inclusive page ranges for journal articles. An annotation of a paragraph or two in length double-spaced.

Annotations should do all of the following, in a standard order you develop and keep consistent:

  • Briefly summarize the text and its purpose, including the thesis and main argument. Your summary will be a body paragraph right below the works cited entry. Remember that direct quoting is not summary. Use paraphrases instead of direct quoting if you must.
  • Briefly mention the author’s credentials. (Google is your friend). If you can’t find anything, let me know how you looked.
  • Analyze the text in terms of general quality; mention/analyze any supplements (charts, illustrations, appendices, etc.); critique the author’s argument if necessary. Identify any weaknesses or problems.
  • Finally, in your last sentence, indicate how you will use this source as evidence in your essay. What claim will it support? If after reading through the source, you feel that you won’t be directly citing it, but it provided you with background knowledge, let me know.

There is no minimum or maximum word count for this assignment, but a complete annotated bibliography with 6 sources is expected to be more than two pages in length. Double space the entire paper, use Times New Roman, 12 point font, and one-inch margins. In MLA, entries should be in alphabetical order, organized by the last name of your source. Be sure to include your last name and the page number in the upper right hand corner of each page after the first. Please refer to sample on D2L.

Because of the nature of the assignment, MLA will be worth 50% of the grade. Refer to the rubric to see the grading standards.

Response

  Discussion 1

Do you think an inclusive classroom will also benefit typical students? Please very briefly explain.

Discussion 2

In your response to other learners, compare their understandings of the term developmentally appropriate instructional strategies to yours. What differences do you see?

Alison post

Based on previous readings and my own experience, a developmentally appropriate curriculum addresses the multiple development needs of each individual student. This process requires various methods and strategy planning, as well as individual lesson planning for students.

Allen states that a “teacher’s role is to help children observe, ask, and find out about things that interest them” (2014, 450). While teaching students to read, write, and do math is important, it is also important for them to develop interests and curiosity on their own. It is the “responsibility of early childhood teachers to make convincing arguments on behalf of these important embedded learning practices” (Allen, 2014, 450).

Assessments are great tools to track a student’s academic progress, however not all assessment formats are compatible with each individual student. No Child Left Behind Act and other forms of school accountability (Klein, 2018) are important to track, but there could be other ways than formal pencil-paper, multiple choice assessments. For some students, test taking becomes an anxiety driven time, causing them to preform poorly on these standard assessments. Giving opportunities for other demonstrations of knowledge could better these assessment results for students.

Students with disabilities tend to preform poorly on standard assessments, which could lead to further discouragement from school environments. Utilizing developmentally appropriate materials, such as assistive technology, also helps bridge this gap for students with disabilities. Assistive technology, when properly used, could enable a student to read, hear, or see better, thus improving their knowledge. My question for you would be, have you utilized any other forms of assessment in your classroom to assess a student’s development?

Nicole post

Based on my readings and my personal experiences, the term developmentally appropriate instructional strategies means a variety of things. Personally, I feel that developmentally appropriate instructional strategies means that all students are learning in ways that are appropriate to their developmental needs, whether they are typically developing or have exceptional needs. If a child is not being taught through developmentally appropriate instruction, they will not be able to learn to the best of their ability. For example, if we are expecting kindergarten students to sit down and write for one hour, that is not developmentally appropriate. By providing young students with hands-on activities that allow them to explore on their own, we are ensuring that they will learn to the best of their ability. According to the readings presented by Allen and Cowdery, “Six general principles are used to identify the best practices for working with children who have special needs; these practices apply equally to early care programs for all children (Odom & McLean, 1996). To be considered a recommended best practice, a strategy must be (1) research-based or value-based, (2) family-centered, (3) multicultural in emphasis, (4) cross-disciplinary, (5) developmentally/chronologically age-appropriate, and (6) normalized” (p. 60).

My understanding of this term corresponds to the No Child Left Behind Act because it demands appropriate education for all students. If there are exceptional students in a classroom that require services that cannot be provided by the general education teacher, they must be provided to the student regardless. This ensures that all children, regardless of disabilities, receive the same opportunities for developmentally appropriate instruction. The teacher and school are held accountable for this child’s success and are expected to advocate for the child when they are in need of something else. Students with disabilities should be provided the same opportunities as all other students, however, I have worked in a district in the past that promised parents things on the child’s IEP, but did not follow through with the promised services because there was not enough staff to work with the child. Students who receive services such as speech, physical therapy, or occupational therapy may need modifications in the classroom to make sure the instruction is developmentally appropriate for them, as well as all the other students.

Question: How do you make sure students are receiving everything they need when dealing with a lack of funding from the district? How can you make your practice developmentally appropriate if you require certain materials that cannot be purchased?

Discussion 3

What works of literature and what authors have influenced your views of the relationship between literature and today’s society? How have they done so? How do we become critical readers and create meaning from text, and what strategies do you use as an active and responsive reader?
