Principles of Persuasion

Assignment 2: LASA 1 Principles of Persuasion

An environmental organization would like to film a pro-recycling public service announcement and have brought you on as a consultant to help them better understand the principles of persuasion and how they should be applied in this PSA. As part of your presentation to the organization you will need to educate them on the principles of persuasion (using what has been learned through previous research) that will need to be applied to their PSA.

By Wednesday, April 6, 2016 you should create a PowerPoint presentation.

In the first 4 to 6 slides of your presentation you will need to:

  • Summarize at least two previous research studies on persuasion.
  • How were the principles of persuasion studied?
  • Was the research valid? Why or why not?
  • What was learned through these studies that can be applied to the creation of the above PSA?

In your next 6 to 10 slides you will incorporate all you have learned about the art of persuasion to create your own PSA PowerPoint presentation to present to this organization that they will use to guide the filming of their video.

In this presentation you will need to:

  • Present a creative argument that will persuade the viewers of the need to recycle, which the video will be based on.
  • Use at least two primary principles of persuasion within this presentation.
  • In the final slide outline which two or more principles were used and why they were a good fit for this PSA.

Your total presentation should be a minimum of 10 to 16 slides (not including your title and reference slides). For your project you will need to be creative in the use of your graphics and fonts in addition to discussing and applying the principles of persuasion.

10 buck if you do it right now

In both plays and novels, the writer is telling a story. When a person enjoys a play, he goes to the theater, sits down with friends, and watches the play live with a group of people. When a person enjoys a novel, he opens the book and reads alone.

So, although plays and novels are both ways that a writer can tell a story, the effect it has on the readers (or viewers) are very different. Which one is better—the play or the novel? Why? Decide on an opinion then defend your opinion with evidence, examples, and reasons. Your response should be one to two paragraphs long.

Comment on some of the entries of your classmates. Refer to the discussion rubric for guidance.

The text must be double spaced, and printed on one side of a page, i.e., not on the front and back (the only two formatting requirements; there is a 2/3 letter grade penalty for noncompliance with either factor). For a heading on the paper, use whatever you like as long as your name is present.

Questions—

1. In Hobbes’ view, how did men actually “covenant with every other man” as though they were to became “a real unity” (or at least unified enough to bring a society about)? In other words, what’s the actual means by which they really reach consent, i.e., achieve a social contract. (approx. 100 words.)

2. Explain how the Hobbesian state of nature is a prisoner’s dilemma. (approx. 100 words.)

3. Explain the non-excludability issue, and why it presents a problem to social contract theory. (approx. 75 words.)

4. In Rawls’ theory, explain the “difference principle,” and especially how it works in relation to the “veil of ignorance.” (100 words.)

5. What is the doctrine of double effect? Do you find it to be plausible? Why or why not? (approx. 125 words.)

Help with Psychology assignment

 Can You Encourage Pro-Social Behavior?

Now that you are an expert in the use of interpersonal influence strategies, can you use what you know to change the behaviors of others? Advertisers and salespeople often use interpersonal influence strategies to make money When in the hands of an unethical influence agent, these strategies can be used to take advantage of you. But they can also be used to promote pro-social behavior changes in attitudes, beliefs, and/or behavior that benefit others, and society as a whole. In this Application Assignment, your goal is to use your understanding of interpersonal influence to encourage people to engage in pro-social behavior.

To prepare for this assignment:

  • Review the sections in Chapter 7 of the course text, Persuasion: Psychological Insights and Perspectives, on reciprocity, social validation, and commitment. Reflect again on the rules and psychological processes that cause each type of strategy to influence change.
  • Identify and describe the steps that are required to use the door-in-the face strategy, the list technique, the four-walls technique, and the legitimization of paltry-favors strategy. Familiarize yourself with how researchers have tested the effectiveness of each strategy.
  • Reflect for a moment on the behavior that each strategy has been shown to change. Consider how you would measure the effectiveness of these interpersonal influence strategies. Can you think of other ways to test a given strategy’s effectiveness?

The assignment (1–3 pages):

For each of the scenarios below, describe: 1) the steps in the strategy, 2) the rule or psychological process that makes it work, and 3) how you would implement the strategy and how you would measure the effectiveness of the strategy. Your responses must be 1–2 paragraphs for each of the following scenarios:

  • Design a way to increase a person’s exercise habits using a door-in-the-face strategy.
  • Get people to reduce their water consumption using a list technique.
  • Create a way to get more people to volunteer time at a soup kitchen by using a four-walls technique.
  • Get people to start recycling by using a legitimization of paltry-favors strategy.

food marketing everyday life from multiple sociological perspectives, Sociology Assignment Homework Help

8SOC 131 Principles of SociologyDoing Sociology: Comparing food marketsDUE 5.4.16

PurposeThis inquiry assignment uses non-participant observation to demonstrate how the process of globalization shapes social life in our local community. You will observe and compare two local markets, writing clear, detailed descriptions when collecting data in the field. Your goal for this assignment is to apply one method, ethnography, to systematically observe the social and spatial ydd organization in local grocery stores.  Although difficult, you should try to use this exercise as an opportunity to view the spaces and routines of everyday life from multiple sociological perspectives. Finally, this assignment should empower you as a self-directed learner. When you have questions or encounter uncertainty, you are encouraged to ask questions.

Description

Compare a larger mainstream grocery store chain (Select one: Giant, Harris Teeter, Safeway, Shopper’s Food Warehouse, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target) with an international food market listed on this Google Map (Select one: Super A Market, Food Star Market, Bestway Supermercado, H Mart, Grand Mart, Good Fortune).  Keep in mind that this project requires that you make site visits to several locations.  Spend at least 45 minutes at each location recording field notes.

Procedure

Step #1. We begin by describing a grocery store. During class you will diagram a store, and  make predictions regarding what you will find during your visit.

Step #2. Visit both stores, spending at least ½ hour taking field notes in each location. In addition  to recording general observations, you will use a list of questions to guide your  observations. For example:

  • Before entering the store, describe relevant aspects of the area/neighborhood

  • Describe the overall store layout (lighting, advertisements, decorations, background music).

  • How are the aisles arranged? Are any aisles labeled for “ethnic” items? If so, how are these aisles labeled? Within the aisles, how are products organized?

  • What kind of products are being sold? Where did these products come from? For example – are there fresh vegetables and fruits?  If so, where was this produce grown?

  • Are products described as ‘organic’?

  • Who frequents this store? What can you tell based on the type of products that are being sold? Also consider the people you see in the store (shoppers & clerks).

  •  Does the store appear to accept forms of public assistance as payment (EBT, WIC, SNAP, etc.)?

You should take detailed field notes, which you will turn in with your final paper.  In your observations, be on the lookout for both similarities and differences.  Also, please take a picture at the store of an item you do not anticipate the other store to have. Record the price of one item that both stores have (milk, bread, or other common items, etc).

Step #3. Place your observations in social context. Learn more about the neighborhoods  surrounding these two food markets. Who lives in these neighborhoods? Has this  changed over the last two decades? Use the links provided as your starting point.

Written Report (Approximately 1000-1500 words):Take a step back to reflect on what we can learn sociologically about our local community from this comparison of different food markets in our region. Describe what you observed in the summary section: how are the two food markets similar and how are they different? Using any relevant sociological concepts that we have covered in class this far, interpret your observations.

Your final report should be labeled and organized according to the following outline:

A. Introduction. Provide an overview of the project (ie applying sociological concepts to understanding globalization in our local community).

B. The greater Washington area. Use the sources below to help in describing changes in the DC area.

Layton, Lyndsey and Keating, Dan.  2006.  “Area immigrants top 1 million.” Washington Post Online.

Singer, Audrey. 2012. Brookings Institution “Metropolitan Washington: A New

Immigrant Gateway”; Presentation

C. Study Context.

Include the table and your analysis of the reviews of 2 grocery stores here [this was the assignment you turned in on 3.17].

D. Observations and analysis.

Describe each location referencing the guiding questions provided. Limit this section to observable phenomena – things that you can see. Use sociological concepts (globalization, race/ethnicity, class, culture, structure, gender, consumption, etc.) to help you make sense of what you see. How were your observations different from your initial predictions in Step #1?

You do not have to include all of your field notes here. Rather you can choose relevant sections that address the concepts you are discussing.

E. Conclusion

As a result of these observations, what can you say about globalization in our metropolitan region?

How do these observations relate to your personal experiences?

F. Appendix: Fieldnotes/Pictures

You can include your full fieldnotes here as well as any pictures you took during your visit.

**Make sure to include a photo you take at the grocery store holding an item from that store.

SUBMISSION/FORMAT

  • Make sure that your paper cites the sources you use accurately using ASA citation format. You will submit an electronic copy of your paper to Turnitin.com.

  • Use Google Docs to share your final version. Everything should be in a single document.

  • Use double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman or Calibri font

Food Justice/Food Deserts

The purpose of this discussion is to offer you the opportunity to debate the issue of food justice and food deserts. Food deserts are a significant issue in poorer neighborhoods in the United States. In many of these neighborhoods, the only access to food is through a local convenience store or a fast food restaurant. This severely limits the options for the poor to have access to fresh and wholesome food and has been evidenced as a key reason for the obesity epidemic in the United States. This issue is encompassed in the overarching topic of food justice, which highlights the issue of food deserts as well as public access to genetically modified foods, organic foods, and the issues of equal access for positive food options in light of public health and social inequality. Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:

Read the Hilmers article assigned this week. Assume that your town is a food desert and you would like to do something about it. Prepare an evidenced argument to present to your local town council that outlines an idea to offer healthy food options to your town. Use at least one ethical theory or perspective to support the moral or ethical reasoning for why this program should be implemented.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center
