  1. Identify      a person from a culture example include (African, Native American, Asian, Pacific      Island, and Latin American and Middle eastern American) with an illness or      chronic condition. The illness needs to be such that it impacts the      person’s life. Please keep in mind that the person with an acute      illness may be under too much stress to answer questions. You may not      interview a member of your own family. You will use eight questions as      defined by Arthur Kleinman to shape your interview. Be cognizant that you      are incorporating therapeutic communication techniques throughout the      interview.
  2. Once      you choose the person you would like to interview, obtain verbal agreement      and be sure to let him or her know that you will maintain confidentiality      throughout this project. Ask the person which cultural group he or she      identifies with. Read about that culture so you will be prepared for the      interview.
  3. In 300 words review what is known about the cultural values of the      group.
  4. During the interview, you may have others present if the person      requests. If so, you will want to look for and recognize the family      dynamics within his or her culture.
  5. Complete      the interview and submit the typed paper in APA format. A minimum of two      references must be used.

Eight Simple Questions by Arthur Kleinman

The Kleinman questions, developed out of medical anthropology research, are designed to elicit health beliefs and expectations, or concerns, about the illness and treatment. You should be familiar with these questions before conducting the interview. Using the eight simple questions provided by Arthur Kleinman, you should be able to individualize care and understand the person you are caring for. You will interview the person concerning the health problem that he or she considers the most significant. Arthur Kleinman’s eight questions for eliciting the person’s explanatory model (EM) of his or her illness are as follows:

1. What do you call the problem?

2. What do you think has caused the problem?

3. Why do you think it started when it did?

4. What do you think the sickness does? How does it work?

5. How severe is the sickness? Will it have a short or long course?

6. What kind of treatment do you think you should receive? What are the most important results you hope to receive from this treatment?

7. What are the chief problems the sickness has caused?

8. What do you fear most about the sickness?

The paper must include the following items, as well as general elements of a well-written paper (clear, specific introduction and conclusion, good transitions between paragraphs and new ideas/points, proper APA format, etc.):

· Discuss whether his or her responses are consistent with common knowledge and information about specific aspects of his or her culture. What was consistent and what was inconsistent?

· Did this experience help you clarify your own views in any way? If so, what and how?

· Discuss what you learned about conducting a culturally sensitive interview.

· If you heard any comments or beliefs that were different than your own views, knowledge, or beliefs, did you respond to what you heard? If you responded, do you think it was the most useful way to respond? If so, how, if not, what would you do in the future?

· In the future, if you conduct an interview with someone from a different culture, what would you do the same and why? What would you do differently and why?

· What did this contribute to your understanding of the healthcare values, beliefs, and/or practices of different cultures?

A befitting video website walking video tour or suitable YouTube link of a Museum or National Park related to U.S. historical events between the 1500s-1865. Regardless of whether the student chooses to physically visit a location or view a site via a weblink route, it is required that they submit a request proposal (via the Mod. 4 Proposal assignment) to the course instructor seeking formal approval before taking the next steps in completing the Mod. 7 writing assignment.

• Following the site visit, using the available assignment template, the student will then type a double space 12 point Times New Roman font reflection (700-800 words) answering the following questions… How is this historical site relevant to events within the 1500s-1865 and the area now known as the United States? What historical information did you learn from this visit? What historical event or events were covered via this site? What (i.e.) artifacts and/or other displayed items were interesting to you and why? In other words, what stood out about this place and why? How did the site help you appreciate history?

• The title page and reference page do not count towards the total page count.

• A key purpose for this assignment is to display and determine what aspects of the location impacted the student and how much the student personally learned while visiting a chosen location. Thus, a clear majority of the body-content of the paper should be written solely in the words of the student. Some information for the paper can be BASED from chosen befitting outside sources, but, again, the body-content should dominantly come from the student’s personal thoughts and experiences resulting from the given location visit. Outside source content may be incorporated within the paper, but should NOT dominate (in verbatim form) a large portion of the write-up. Any borrowed statements from these sources must be placed within quotation marks, properly cited in Turabian format, and these sources must be included (in correct Turabian format) within a closing bibliography section.

• When you are finished, your assignment must be:
