Lorraine Hansberry opens her play A Raisin in the Sun with the poem “Harlem (A Dream Deferred)” by Langston Hughes. The title of the play is clearly an allusion to the poem. Write an essay in which you explain how the play illustrates the theme of the poem. Discuss specifically the different characters and their dreams in relation to the two works. Use concrete examples, details, and quotations from both works, and fully explain the literary elements that appear. You are required to include support from the primary texts as well as one outside source from the database Literary Reference Center. If you are accessing this database off campus, you will need a GTC library card.

This essay includes quoting from a play and a poem. Be very attentive to proper quotations. Incorrect use of the original, misquotation, is documentation failure. Consult the handbook for citation guidelines.  Having only one or two references from the literary criticism and the two works is not enough support.  Please make sure to support your points.

The only sources this essay should include are the criticism you find from a database, A Raisin in the Sun, and “Harlem (A Dream Deferred).” You must list all three sources (two primary, poem and play; one secondary, article from database) on the Works Cited page.
