Operations Management – Defining Quality

OVERVIEW:

Everyone wants a product or experience that is “high quality,” but stop and consider what that really means. For instance, if someone is in the market for a new car, a high-quality car might denote one that can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in just a few seconds. To someone else (perhaps a new parent), a high-quality car might be one with a great safety rating. Yet still to another, a high-quality car might be the most comfortable, most prestigious, the best on gas mileage, or one that rates favorably on any number of attributes or combination of attributes. When thinking about the different types of automobiles described here, also consider that what might be high-quality to one person might not be viewed as such to another.

Indeed, the definition of the term “quality” is subjective. Note that the American Society for Quality, one of the preeminent organizations that deals with quality management, even lists two definitions for the term in its glossary. Although quality can be subjective, one thing is for certain: every customer wants a quality product or service, and therefore every business wants to deliver that quality. If quality is simply the ability to satisfy needs and/or not be rife with deficiencies, then it is difficult to imagine any product or service that does not need to have quality. Thus, regardless of how one wishes to view quality, it is apparent that operations managers must thoroughly understand how to produce high-quality products or services.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Define quality in your own words. Considering your definition and the materials you reviewed this module, why is quality so important to an organization?
  2. Find an example of a company that has experienced a quality problem and describe the situation and its ramifications. Was the problem ever fixed?

Assignment 3

[ad_1]

A prestigious university has recently implemented a consolidation strategy that will require it to centralize their student records. In order to move forward, the local university will need to develop a data model that will retain student records and perform various data extract transform and load (ETL) processes. Imagine that you have been hired as a database consultant to assist in the development of a data design strategy for the student records. You met with various university subject matter experts and have determined the following after performing various business analysis processes: Faculty groups are divided by core competencies that the university offers. For example, there are groups such as the Art Faculty, Computer Technology Faculty, Language Faculty, and Science Faculty. Each faculty member has an assigned Dean and is designated to teach at one particular campus and school. They are able to teach as many courses as required. Courses are categorized by course code and title. Certain courses have prerequisites and the university has asked for this to be cataloged as well. There are various schools within each campus. For example, the Los Angeles campus holds the following schools: School of Science, School of Law, and School of Computer Technology. Additionally, each school offers different professional study programs such as Forensic Computer Science, Marine Biology, Business Management, and Civil Engineering to name a few.  The study path for students requires that they be enrolled in a specific professional study program. The professional study program requires the students to complete a specific set of core courses. The university also requires that an online grade book be available. The online grade book should show grades awarded to students for specific courses and the term they completed the course. The university identifies each student by his or her name, date of birth, social, and professional study program.Using these findings, write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you: Analyze the university’s requirements and provide a proposal to organize all the required data elements. The proposal should include the following: Provide an Entity Relationship Model (ERM) that will describe the data structure that will store all data elements. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length. Describe any assumptions or limitations for each relationship. For example, professors are able to teach more than one course or students can only be enrolled in one program. Create the primary key and foreign keys using a UML Class diagram for each table. Suggest at least four (4) types of business intelligence reports that could help the university in course management, student enrollment, or historical tracking. Support your answer by providing specific business functions that these reports could assist executives of the university. As an alternative for development of the database, you are considering outsourcing the functions above. Research the Internet and other media sources for vendors who develop registrar and school management database systems. Suggest three (3) vendors that developed and are employing efficient registrar and school management database systems and support your reasons to choose from one (1) of these three (3) vendors. Compare and contrast the key aspects that each system offers. Examples of system aspects include but not limited to cloud based, pricing model, open source, etc. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements: Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format.Points: 120Assignment 3: University Database CriteriaUnacceptableBelow 70% FFair70-79% CProficient80-89% BExemplary90-100% A1. Discussion

“Minimizing Audit Risk” Please respond to the following:

  • According to your textbook, auditors have to make judgments concerning materiality on every audit. Since the auditing standards give no formal guidance for how to determine materiality, auditors must rely on their own experience. Determine at least three (3) qualitative factors that affect the auditor’s judgment. Provide a rationale for your response.
  • According to the textbook, auditors rely on the audit risk formula to determine the types and amount of audit evidence to collect in order to keep the overall audit risk of engagements to a minimum or below defined tolerable limits. Suggest an alternative to the audit risk equation in order to mitigate audit risk. Support your rationale with examples of the successful use of the alternative strategy.

ENG 107

Assignment:  Marjane Satrapi grew up in Iran in the 70s and 80s, during the Islamic Revolution.  Malala Yousafzai grew up in Pakistan in the early 2000s.  Ta-Nehisi Coates grew up in Baltimore, coming of age in the late 80s / early 90s, during the crack epidemic.  All three of them had educated parents (or at least one educated parent), all three encountered violence and extremist world views at a young age, yet they are all very different people.  This assignment is asking you to analyze their similarities and differences, as well as to explore the similarities and differences of the social and political circumstances they grew up with, and the role that education played in all three of their lives.

Some questions you may want to ask yourself as you work on this assignment:  Did they grow up with privilege and/or wealth?  All of them are rebellious people, but in what ways are their rebellious natures different?  In what ways are they the same?  What, if any, are the social, political, and religious similarities of their childhoods?  How important was education to their development as people?  Did they embrace education or struggle with it (or both)?  Would they return to their homes if they could, or are they happier living in their current respective cities?  What other important questions can you think of when comparing and contrasting these three significantly different people?

Requirements:

  1. 1,000-1,500 words, plus a Works Cited page.
  2. No less than five (5) sources, three of which MUST be The Complete Persepolis, He Named Me Malala, and Between the World and Me, plus two additional sources, both of which MUST be academic.
